If you've been keeping up with House Beautiful's penchant for finding the most coveted couches on the market, you already know that we have an affinity for everything, from loveseats to sprawling sectionals to apartment sofas. These are basically sofas big enough to comfortably seat more than one person but small enough to squeeze into an apartment without dwarfing it. Luckily, all of the editors at House Beautiful live in apartments and own sofas that fit perfectly. The best part? We genuinely love them and don't want to gatekeep.
Ahead, you'll find eight apartment sofas that are equal parts comfortable, spacious, and small space-friendly. So whether you live in a studio or a three-bedroom, you'll be pleased to know that pretty much all of these will manage to fit wherever you put them. What's more, we didn't just pop in our own sofas, tell you a bit about them, and call it a day; we actually took photos of our sofas in our spaces, spilled the beans on what makes them great (and what they can improve on), and we chatted with not one, not two, but three interior designers about how to shop for them; what to look for; and more.

A frequent hostess, Digital Designer Soumi Sarkar had a few non-negotiables when shopping for a couch this past spring: it had to be big enough to fit more than two people, cozy, and pet-friendly. She admits that the Sundays Movie Night sofa checked all of her boxes. "I've really enjoyed it, it's been super comfortable. I'm very much a couch person; I watch TV, do work, and host on it," she says. "When my friends come over, it very much feels like a battle for the couch because everyone else also loves it so much."
What's more, she says, you don't really need to do anything after you submit your order. Mere weeks later, someone from the Sundays team will reach out to schedule free in-home delivery and assembly. As for day-of ease, she notes the team was in and out in just 15 minutes for delivery and assembly.

A sectional may not seem like the obvious sofa for a small space, but this one is actually designed for apartments. Just ask Senior Commerce Editor Marina Liao, who enjoyed this leather sectional in her Brooklyn apartment for years. "When we were looking for a small space-friendly sectional for our 750-square-foot home, I turned to Burrow," she admits. "I had a friend who worked there, so we were able to get a slight discount on it, but five years in with the Nomad, I can 100 percent say I would buy this for the full price because it's worth it."
Liao goes on to explain that "the sectional is comfortable, supportive, and the soft leather wears down well even after all these years of us sitting and sleeping on it." What's more, if you don't love constantly cleaning your fabric sofa, leather is a good alternative. "Leather always feels clean, unlike fabric sofas, which tend to make me itchy if they're not cleaned well. When we moved into a larger apartment last summer, our living room was still so small (NYC problems), so the Nomad came with us and fits perfectly in our open-concept living area. I just swapped out the gold legs for the wood ones now, since those have a more Brooklyn feel."
Note: if you don't want a leather sofa, the Nomad also comes in fabric and performance-velvet materials, and each fabric comes in a variety of colors. You can even adjust the sofa's cushion feel to your liking with Burrow's "standard" and "plus" choices. Since you're dropping a couple thousand for this sofa, take comfort in knowing that it will last you for years to come.

Tester Katelyn Lunders, loves her small, space-friendly 7th Avenue sectional (read her full review here). She's had it for over a year, so she can properly speak to its durability and comfort over time. "While I appreciate an easy-to-clean couch, my most important quality is comfort. I can confidently say that the 7th Avenue sectional has only gotten more comfortable over time," she says. "When I first tested the sofa, I didn't love sleeping on it. Now, I fall asleep on the couch more times than I care to admit and wake up happily rested. Plus, the endless configurations and replaceable covers mean it can grow with your home, budget, and lifestyle over the years.” She’s not wrong. When you buy this sofa, you can add more pieces over the years to make it big enough to fit all your family and friends.

When you think of a sofa small enough to fit comfortably in an apartment, a convertible couch may not come to mind, but Assistant Social Media Editor Bianca Bonnetti's Article piece is the exception. "Since my move-in date snuck up on me, I was in a hurry to receive a sofa, so I chose an in-stock option from Article, and it was delivered within a week," she says. "I was impressed with the buttery-soft feel of the stain-resistant performance fabric. Although the couch is a lot firmer than I anticipated, it's still very comfortable with or without the ottoman. I'm happy with my decision to get a matching ottoman instead of a sectional because it gives me a lot of flexibility in a small room that's only eight feet wide."

There is nothing better than quite literally kicking back and relaxing, which is why we are big fans of reclining sofas. Digital Director Blair Donovan is so into the idea of leaning back on her couch that she invested in quite a luxurious piece to accomplish her relaxation goals. Plus, it fits in her tiny New York City apartment, which is a worthy bonus. "I’ve owned Homebody's Luxe two-seat sofa for over two years, and it's been a game changer in my little living room," she says. "It's big enough to fit two to three people (or one overnight guest) comfortably, without fully overtaking the space. Two giant seat and back cushions also give this sofa that coveted 'cloud-like' feel, although they do need to be fluffed somewhat often to maintain their structure."

If you need a sofa quickly (meaning, no waiting weeks on end) and it doesn’t harm the environment like many fast-furniture brands might, check out Sabai. “When I moved into my previous apartment, a 400-square-foot one-bedroom in New York City, I needed a sofa that was both big enough for me to spread out, but not so big that it dwarfed my apartment even more than it already was. So, after days of researching, I landed on Sabai’s Essential sofa,” Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner says. Full disclosure, it is on the firmer side, so if you like a cloud couch feel, this isn’t the sofa for you. That said, it is comfortable, and your back will never hurt or ache the way it might on a softer alternative. “The seat is firm, but the back actually comprises very soft, removable cushions, so it’s definitely cozy.”

The Sundays Chill Time sofa is another fan favorite amongst those who prefer a sink-in feel. One such fan is tester Samantha Jones. "Anytime I have guests over, their first question is almost always, 'Where did you get your couch from?' After owning this couch for over a year, I can understand why: It's extremely comfortable for hosting movie nights, Sunday afternoon napping, and even hosting overnight guests," Jones explains. "Its cushions are as plush and supportive as they were when I first bought it, and I've found that the white color is easy to clean thanks to its removable, washable covers, so it still looks basically new."

Calling everyone living in a studio apartment: We found the perfect couch for you. “I have a very specific aesthetic (I tend to gravitate towards curved furniture in pale, neutral shades), but I also work from home, so I prioritize comfort as much as I do appearance. After literally weeks of looking, I found this sofa in the West Elm store (I had to sit on it before buying it to make sure it’s comfortable enough), and loved it so much that I bought it on the spot” says tester Danielle Collins, whose former sofa in a previous apartment is also on this list. “It is so comfortable with a very deep seat, so even though it’s not gigantic, I can definitely spread out and lean back. It’s supremely comfy.”

While many of the apartment sofas on this list have been in our homes for a year or more, we also tested several options for months to determine if they were worthy of inclusion in this roundup. We evaluated the sofas based on style, durability, and whether they truly fit within the confines of a New York City apartment. If they work in a NYC space, where square footage is lacking, they will work anywhere else.

When it comes to picking out the sofa for your small space, designer Miranda Cullen has a word of advice: "Typically, in a smaller space, the largest piece tends to be the focal point, and that piece tends to be the sofa—even if it's a small one," she says. "The priority is making sure that your choice of sofa is appropriately scaled, so nothing too big and nothing too small. The best types of sofas in smaller living rooms are typically considered 'apartment-sized.' They can be just as cozy and comfy as the over-scaled options." The takeaway here is always to measure so that your sofa fits perfectly in the space. After all, it may be small, but it doesn't have to sacrifice style.
Interior designer Becky Shea agrees. She adds, "Avoid bulky furniture and opt for sleek and streamlined pieces that don't take up too much space visually." Even if a sofa is small, heavy features (like rolled arms, for instance) can make it appear bigger, which isn't ideal in a spatially limited room. Opt for something slender. Of course, there are exceptions, but unless you're dealing with unusual room proportions, opt for something on the narrow end of the spectrum.

In terms of shape, the only real limit is the size of the room. "Fight your instinct to go small. When selecting a sofa, choose the largest piece that fits in the space without restricting the flow. Find a sofa with open legs that will give brevity while still defining the area," designer Sarah Rosenhaus says, when it comes to the purchase process. You can opt for an L sectional or a more traditional shape, but if you want to maximize the space, you may want to stick to the latter.
If, on the other hand, you would like a sofa to be multifunctional, Shea says, "Look for pieces that can serve multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed or a chaise with storage." One more small space hero tip? "A loveseat or apartment-sized sofa is a good alternative," Shea reminds us. She's not wrong. There's nothing more cozy than snuggling up on a plush chair just big enough to squeeze two people.
Before you click 'Add to Cart,' do a final check of the measurements. "When picking a sofa for a smaller room, the most important factor is always making sure it's appropriately scaled to the space," Cullen explains. "If, for instance, you have a living room with unobstructed walls, you can opt for a small sectional as opposed to a traditional two- or three-seater. A client's preferred style and aesthetic will ultimately dictate the sofa type, but the scale is the driving factor—always."

According to Cullen, this depends on your personal style. "Sometimes, a client wants us to go bold and layered, and sometimes, they prefer we go clean and tailored. The choice is totally up to the client, and we can always make it work," she says. The best part is that you don't have to be or hire a professional interior designer (or you can hire one on the cheap) to do the same. The key to fitting a couch in a narrow space without sacrificing style is quite literally to make it fit. The easiest way to make your room look odd is to opt for a couch that's too big or too small for the space. We've said it once, and we'll say it again: Measure, measure, measure! This is the easiest way to fit a sofa in a narrow space, literally and aesthetically.

I have spent eight years writing about all things home, including furniture, and have interviewed countless interior designers about what makes a product worthy in your space. I have written about every sofa topic under the sun, from the best Chesterfield sofas to the best down-filled options, so you can trust I've done my research when it comes to buying one for a small space.
For this story, I tapped three design experts, Becky Shea, Sarah Rosenhaus, and Miranda Cullen, for further insights into buying a sofa for small spaces and how to go about the journey. Shea is a New York City interior designer whose full-service firm and lifestyle studio, dubbed BS/D, specializes in organic modernist principles. Meanwhile, Rosenhaus founded her eponymous full-service Santa Monica-based design firm back in 2003, and Cullen is an internationally recognized interior designer and founder of Inside Stories, one of Colorado's leading firms. She currently leads a team of 20-plus designers at her Denver-based studio, which has earned more than a few accolades, including the International Design & Architecture award from the International Design & Architecture Committee in 2022.
