Whether you like it or not, warm weather is finally on its way, and that means one thing: al fresco everything. All the things we love to do inside, we’re bringing outside, and making sure our outdoor areas are in tip-top shape is key. Of course, you can always buy new furniture, but if you want to make a real impact without having to do too much, consider investing in a new outdoor rug. Ahead, we rounded up the best ones on the market, and rest assured, they come in every size, color, style, and price, so you are definitely going to find something that works for you.

We didn’t just pick out our favorite outdoor rugs and call it a day, though. We also consulted with landscape designer Brantley Snipes, who offers all of her expert tips and tricks for styling, cleaning, and living with an outdoor rug. Perhaps her most notable piece of advice: “It should all flow," Snipes says. "It's the connector from your yard to the inside. This is a great way to transition between the two, and rugs allow you to do that.” Well, there you have it. Now, shop all of our top picks below.

Finley Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Pros

  • Available in four sizes
  • Made of recycled materials
  • Due to handcrafted nature, each piece is one-of-a-kind

Cons

  • Comes in only one color

This Rejuvenation rug works both indoors and outdoors, but given its tough composition and very flat weave, we think it would shine brightest outside. The rust color also feels a little like a sunrise or sunset, and those kinds of shades are best enjoyed in the great outdoors. It’s also made of recycled materials and comes in various sizes, which is what makes it the best outdoor rug overall, in our opinion.

Sicily Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Pros

  • Made of 100 percent washable polypropylene
  • Easy to clean
  • Ships in one day

Cons

  • Requires a rug pad

You can't go wrong with a black-and-white rug, and this ultra-affordable pick is so timeless and smart—you'll never see a stain! Made of washable polypropylene, it's designed to withstand the inevitable wear and tear of backyard get-togethers. One reviewer said, "I purchased two of these doorway rugs along with the matching 5'3" x 7'6" area rug. You can't go wrong with The Novogratz. I love their designs and have purchased many sizes in different prints throughout my house: indoors and out."

It’s called the Icon rug, and we get why: It’s pretty iconic. This is giving 1950s Beverly Hills Hotel vibes in the best way. It’s obviously bright, but that’s what summer is all about, so if you like punchy shades, this is definitely the rug for you. What’s more, if you like that Old Hollywood feel, pair it with a mostly white backdrop to let the rug really shine.

Birch Lane Inga Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Inga Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Pros

  • Stain- and fade-proof
  • Available in two sizes
  • 100 percent polypropylene fiber (the most durable)

Cons

  • Not available in a runner

This area rug is quite regal and muted, which makes us think it would work best in a more demure outdoor setting than one more geared toward the loud, maximalist vibe. What’s more, it may look delicate, but it’s both stain-resistant and pet-friendly. It’s also fade-proof, so feel free to leave it in the sunniest spot and enjoy it for many summers to come.

Best Luxury Outdoor Rug

Neighbor Braid Rug

Pros

  • Available in four colors and three sizes
  • 45-day free trial
  • Free swatch kit available

Cons

  • Hard to clean

Neighbor only sells things designed for the outdoors. Yes, their wares tend to be on the expensive side, but it’s one of the more luxurious brands, so you get what you pay for. And in the case of the Braid rug, that’s braids of thick Sunbrella yarn woven together to create a durable outdoor rug that feels like it would work in a bedroom because it’s so soft underfoot. See for yourself and enjoy it for a 45-day free trial. We have a feeling you’ll want to hang onto it, though.

Best Jute Outdoor Rug

Ernesta Cordelia Rug

Cordelia Rug

Pros

  • Extremely durable
  • Custom sizing available
  • Try 5 samples at home for $10

Cons

  • Additional colors not available

We simply cannot tally up the best outdoor rugs and not include a classic jute option. Jute may not be the softest rug option, but there’s a reason these types of rugs are on almost all of the stylish outdoor spaces out there: They’re beautiful, and they’re durable, and that’s about all you need to upgrade your patio. The cool thing about this particular rug is that you can plug in your own custom dimensions to make sure that your rug is perfectly proportioned to your outdoor area. How’s that for bespoke?

Best Neutral Outdoor Rug

West Elm Woven Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Woven Indoor/Outdoor Rug

Pros

  • Available in multiple sizes and shapes
  • Made of all-weather polypropylene
  • Reversible

Cons

  • Traps debris in thicker weave

This rug has been one of the brand's best-sellers for years. It is simple in both texture and color (all-weather polypropylene designed to look like jute) and comes in six sizes, including a six-foot circle, so it really would work in pretty much any outdoor space. As is the case with lots of outdoor goods, it is durable and easy to care for. Just shake it out and vacuum regularly.

Matthies Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug

Pros

  • Available in multiple sizes
  • Works inside and outside
  • Ideal for high-traffic areas

Cons

  • Available in only one color

We love a Moroccan-style area rug. From the intricate patterns to the rich palette, there's nothing not to love. The only problem? Most of them are designed to ground spaces indoors, not out. (They're often made using wool, which is not an outdoor-friendly material) So, imagine our delight when we happened upon this Moroccan-inspired rug specifically designed to work outside. One happy reviewer said, "This rug gave new life to my patio. The colors are so vibrant and beautiful."

Pottery Barn Madel Outdoor Rug

Best Actually Soft Outdoor Rug

Pottery Barn Madel Outdoor Rug

Pros

  • Durable and soft underfoot
  • Rug pad not necessary
  • Handmade

Cons

  • Handmade nature may cause some shedding at first

This Pottery Barn area rug is just as beautiful indoors as it is out. You may be wondering what makes a rug work in both settings, and we're here to tell you: If you will be using it outside, prioritize the material (you'll want something durable that won't fall apart in inclement weather), and if you'll be using it inside, focus on how the rug feels underfoot. When you're buying something that can work in either space, both elements are equally important. With this rug, it's as durable as it is soft.

Charlie Collection Area Rug

Pros

  • Neutral stripe design
  • Low pile won't snag on furniture
  • Available in multiple colors

Cons

  • May be creased upon arrival

This versatile find from Joanna Gaines's collab with Loloi rugs has a gorgeous, classic design that's available in multiple color options. Take your pick from dark brown and charcoal striped designs. Even better: the high-quality polypropylene just needs to be vacuumed or occasionally hosed down and left to dry. "I am in love with this fantastic rug! I put it outside on our covered patio and it has been such an upgrade to our space," one reviewer said. "We have had some crazy weather in Texas this spring, but this rug dried quickly and still looks great. Since it was labeled as an outdoor rug I expected it to be scratchy on my feet, but it is so soft despite how durable it is. I'm so happy with this rug and I highly recommend it to other people!"

How We Selected the Best Outdoor Rugs

best gardening gloves

Many House Beautiful team members live in New York City (or the surrounding boroughs), where private outdoor space is nonexistent, so unlike some of the other products we recommend (like bedding sets, sofas for small spaces, and waffle towels), we didn't have the luxury of testing out all of the internet's favorite rugs. That said, to find the best rugs, we turned to the brands we know that make high-quality products at reasonable prices, like West Elm and Wayfair, for options. First, we picked the outdoor rugs we considered the most versatile. Next, we spent hours reading through every single review, putting forth only the ones that were backed by tons of positive experiences.

What to Know Before Buying an Outdoor Rug

Size: When Snipes is working with clients on patios and porches, she says the first step is to figure out what you're using the space for and measure from there. As a rule of thumb, get a rug that's slightly bigger than what you think you need. "A lot of times I see rugs that are too small for the space, and so we really want to make sure that it's appropriately scaled to the size," Snipes says.

Price: As for how much you should spend, that depends on how much wear and tear you think it'll receive. "For a covered space, investing in a higher-end rug is totally a necessity," Snipes says. "You'll have an added level of protection. I tell clients on fully exposed patios that don't have any coverage: "Maybe your rug is something you don't spend as much money on, and you can change it from year to year."

Material: You will also need to consider the material of your rug. The best ones that weather well are typically made from a synthetic material like polypropylene, also called olefin, since it's breathable, moisture-wicking, and often stain-resistant. If you're going with a natural fiber like jute, just make sure you regularly hang it in the sun to promote air circulation. It'll require a bit more upkeep and care than synthetic options.

Can Outdoor Rugs Be Left Outside?

house beautiful line break

Generally speaking, any furniture or decor that's marketed as being outdoor-friendly is made with more durable materials that can survive the elements. Provided you choose the right outdoor rug for your space (take a peek at the above elements that double as a buying guide) and take care of it, your outdoor rug can and should definitely be left outside. That said, Snipes says that outdoor rugs often aren't used correctly.

"Outside conditions are so much more extreme, clearly, than inside conditions," Snipes says. "You're looking at things such as mildew, moths, rain, and leaf debris that stain if it sits on a textile too long. Or you've got dogs, you've got kids, or you've got a fire pit and a spark flies up and burns a section of it." Her suggestion? Steer clear of natural fibers like seagrass and sisal for outdoor use. Additionally, we always suggest checking the care instructions on your rug because even though most can be left outdoors, it may need to be taken inside come winter if you get snowstorms, for instance.
