This folding chair may be one of the more expensive options on the list, but hear us out: It is extremely comfortable and easy to transport, courtesy of the travel bag that comes complete with an adjustable strap and zippered compartment.
"I bought two of these when my wife and I moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where we spend plenty of time outside," Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner's father, Jonathan Cherner, says. "We bring them to our neighborhood dog park and let the dogs run free while we sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, wine, or a snack. I could sit in these for hours; they're so comfortable. The best part, though, is the fact that I can fold them up, zip them into the carrying case, and lay them flat in my car's trunk. They don't take up any space when they're folded up." Our Senior Commerce Editor Marina Liao has a thing for vintage (or vintage-looking) pieces, so when she happened upon this set of folding lawn chairs, she had to have them. Sadly, since she first ordered them about a month ago, the exact color option has sold out, but luckily there are several additional colorways still on offer, including the red-and-white set.
"I've been wanting some retro-style lawn chairs for the longest time and was eyeing this pair from Wayfair because it was so affordable. When I got them, I was surprised at how sturdy and solid they felt. They opened up and closed easily (no assembly required). All you have to do is grip the top of the chair back and the seat with your hands, then fold it up like a book!" she says. "I didn't realize the chairs came with cupholders either, which are so nice if you need a place to set down your beer or water."
What's more, when Liao finds a good product, she doesn't keep it to herself. Rather than store them inside until she feels like using them, she lent them to her dad when he went on a fishing trip. "My dad actually borrowed these from me so that he would have a place to sit while he waited for his bait to lure in the fish. He said they were comfortable to sit in for the day, and I can attest that for a few hours, these are perfect. I wouldn't want to sit in them for more than 10+ hours without moving, though, as the chairs don't have adjustable levels."

Once Liao's father, Peter, took a seat in Marina's Wayfair set, he had to sample her Beach State chair as well. Since he didn't know which would be more comfortable, this chair or the set from Wayfair, he decided to borrow both for his fishing trip to Delaware. "This chair is very comfortable. I sat in it while fishing for three hours and it did not hurt my back. It is a low to the ground, but I am not that old yet, so I did not have trouble getting up," he admits. "However, it requires minor assembly, which is not hard if you follow the instructions. It looks very expensive and isn't bad, I like it." When you think of a classic lawn chair, something like this Bespoke Post option may come to mind. It's a lightweight and cozy find designed for outdoor activities such as camping, tailgating, and backyard gatherings. House Beautiful tester Madison Meltzer, put it to the test and reviewed it for a period of two weeks to get a sense of just how good it is.
"The Wren chair is sturdy and well-built with handles on both the top and bottom of the chair, making it easy to carry and set up," she says. "It's a sleek design that seems like it would be easy to wipe clean, and the charcoal fabric would hide any stains. The chair is slightly heavier, likely due to the sturdy construction and wood details on the arms, so it’s something to consider if you would need to carry it for a long distance."
One thing to note: Unlike some other chairs on our list, this one must be manually snapped into place to maintain its shape. Once it's unfolded, simply snap the hinge onto a built-in hook on either side of the frame. The whole process takes about 10 seconds. Easy, peasy.

You can't go wrong with a classic Adirondack chair, and this one comes in a set of two. Generally speaking, when any Adirondack arrives, you need to set aside a few hours to assemble it, and then leave it in its place of your choosing forever. This one, however, assembles in a matter of minutes and folds in half, so if you want to bring it out on sunny, warm days and tuck it away in the winter without using up the last of the floor space in your garage, this will do the trick. "I have enjoyed these Adirondack chairs for as long as I can remember. Over the years, they have patinaed into this warm, weathered wood finish, which is what makes them so classic," Cherner says. "They require a bit of a learning curve when it comes to getting cozy in them, but once you figure it out, you'll never want to sit in any other type of lawn chair."

As New Yorkers, the House Beautiful editors have mastered making life work in a relatively small space that doesn't come with much outdoor space. That said, as any New Yorker can tell you, one of the best things about living in the Big Apple is leaving it—at least for a few hours—to experience more calming places, like the beach, the park, or the lake, and none of these relaxing outposts are complete without somewhere comfy to take a seat. At the start of summer, I asked my fellow editors (and friends of House Beautiful) to pick and test a lawn chair of their liking, and use it on their outings near and far. My only request? Sit in it for at least an hour to ensure it is indeed comfortable. I also asked them to consider the ease of carrying it from place to place, long-term comfort, assembly (if applicable), and other factors. Not only did they report back in spades, but they also took photos of their outings with the chairs to document their adventures in the wild.
