Before you block off the next several days to search for a new sofa at one of the millions of retailers that sell them, hear me out: Just look at Crate & Barrel. No, I am not saying to begin your search there and branch out if you can't find anything; I am saying to start and end your search at Crate & Barrel, a retailer our very own shopping editor (me) loves dearly.
When my fiancé and I moved into our current apartment, we decided the three-seater sofas in our respective spaces weren't going to cut it in our shared home. We needed a new, big couch that we could enjoy for years and years. It needed to be stylish, comfortable, and easy to customize because, let's face it, I am difficult. So, I ended up at the Crate & Barrel store and found The One after sitting on a mere three couches. I think I broke a record for fastest decision made.
The great thing about Crate & Barrel is that the pieces are definitely luxurious, but the price point doesn't reflect the quality. No, I am not saying the sofas are cheap because they're definitely not, but the prices won't elicit a gasp of disbelief either. So, if it's time to get rid of your sad, tired sofa, keep scrolling because these winners from Crate & Barrel will upgrade your living room in more ways than one, like it did for me.
The Avondale chaise sofa is the perfect find if you are in the market for a sectional that doesn't require you to commit to a left- or right-facing configuration. In fact, I bought this when I moved into my current New York City apartment over the summer last year. I wanted to invest in a good-quality sectional that I could have for a while, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a piece I'd have now that wouldn't work in a future apartment.
The Crate & Barrel designer who helped me shop introduced me to the Avondale, and I bought it almost immediately. You can put the chaise on either side, so there's no need to worry about whether or not you can use the sectional in a future home. Plus, it's just so cozy.
It's also available in more than 250 fabric options, so you are bound to find a texture and color that suits your space and style. I love the look of a navy sofa, but while I wanted a velvet, my boyfriend was leaning more towards a twill, so we compromised and went with navy chenille, which looks like twill and feels like velvet.

I love a leather sofa because it's both luxurious and unpretentious. Plus, because the upholstery is made with fine, full-grain leather, each couch will vary ever so slightly in color, texture, and markings, making each sofa one of a kind.
One major difference to note between leather and fabric sofas is the cleaning process. Fabrics tend to be a lot more forgiving than leather, which stains more easily. For minor messes, wipe with a microfiber cloth; for anything bigger, enlist a professional cleaning service to protect the leather's integrity. Otherwise, leather really is superior.

Anyone with an affinity for either a cottagecore or a coastal aesthetic will appreciate a slipcovered sofa because there's something very easy and laid-back about it. Unlike the previous pick, though, it doesn't come in myriad fabric options, which is both good and bad. On the one hand, all three of the fabric options are in stock and ready to ship, so there's no need to go without a sofa for months. On the other hand, if the three fabrics don't pair well with your space, you must either redesign your space or opt for a different couch. Personally, I am very into the seashell. There's no need to worry about getting it dirty; if you notice spots or dirt, just take off the cover and pop it in the washing machine. However, upon closer inspection, you may realize it's a sleeper sofa with a five-inch thick gel-infused memory foam mattress that's wrapped in four-way stretch microfiber. They're a polyfiber and feather-blend encased in downproof ticking, so if you've ever sat on a cloud couch, this will feel very similar. Get this sleeper sofa with either a standard or memory foam mattress.
