11 Stylish, Family-Friendly Couches That Don't Scream "Kids Live Here!"

They won't end up with forever-stains, break in two, or drive you nuts.

By

My family of four has owned five couches in the last 18 years, and I’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. In real life, my advice is to pick your living room couch with family movie night in mind. That is, make sure there's enough room for everyone to hang out comfortably, and if a little buttered popcorn or ice cream gets spilled, cleaning it up won’t stress you out. Here’s how I chose the couches to include on this list:

What to Look for in a Family-Friendly Couch

Care: A comfortable place to hang out is the goal, but since spills, crumbs, and dirt happen, a couch that’s easy to clean is priority #1. Some of the couches on this list have covers that can be removed entirely and washed in the washing machine. Others are made of fabrics treated to be stain- and water-resistant, so they only require spot cleaning.

Materials: Bouclé, blended weaves, and chenille are popular fabrics for family-friendly couches since they are machine-washable. Even some of the velvet couches on this list are machine-washable (but others require dry cleaning, so look closely). I also included a top-grain leather option, which is ideal for families with allergies.

Durability: You want cushions that can handle typical kid behaviors (think standing and jumping) over time. From the wood and steel frames to the washable covers, these couches are designed with durability and longevity, not just comfort, in mind.

4-Seat Modular Chaise Sectional

Pros

  • All covers are removable and machine-washable
  • Replacement cushion inserts are available for purchase
  • Comes in many fabric and color choices

Cons

  • Assembly takes a while

We named 7th Avenue's couch the best overall couch with washable covers, because whether you choose the textured weave, woven chenille, or even velvet covers, you won’t have to worry about messes. Customers at 7th Avenue say that even the white (shown here) and light-colored sofas are “very easy to keep clean,” so if you're tired of sticking to dark colors because of the kids, here’s your chance to switch it up.

What makes it so easy? All 21 fabric options for this sofa have a durable water-repellent coating, so liquids and sauces won’t stain, and they clean easily. In fact, all covers—the back, arms, and cushions—are removable and machine-washable.

It’s also designed for durability, not warping or stretching with heavy use over time. The covers are easily replaceable if you want a new style, and you can expand the size and layout of this sofa by buying extra seats individually, including a storage ottoman. I especially like that you can buy the cushion inserts separately if one of yours loses its shape over the years.

Kivik Sofa with Chaise

Pros

  • All covers are removable and machine-washable
  • You can buy an entire set of new covers and change your design
  • Affordable option that lasts a long time for families

Cons

  • Cushion insert replacements not available

IKEA’s Kivik sofa is a durable, easy-to-care-for pick. I owned this exact sofa for 10 years, and my favorite thing about it was being able to remove all covers, even on the back and base, and wash them. It made such a difference, especially when my kids were younger. When our covers started looking worn out, we simply bought another set in a different color (13 are available) and gave our living room a new look.

Another thing I loved was the low, wide arms that my kids could easily crawl over when they were little, and often doubled as yet another seat on the couch. And then there’s the price. You could spend twice or three times as much on a large sectional, but IKEA, as usual, keeps the price low for this minimal, functional pick.

The only downside for me is that the cushions eventually flattened, most notably on the chaise, but after years of heavy use, it was expected. Unfortunately, IKEA doesn’t sell replacement cushion inserts for its sofas.

Kova Pillow Cushion Sofa Ottoman

Pros

  • Non-slip panels on the cushion covers
  • Easy to assemble
  • Has optional storage ottomans

Cons

  • Storage ottoman cover cannot be removed for washing

There are a lot of cloud couches out there, but Albany Park’s is our pick for families. Here's why.

All of their fabrics are treated to resist stains and spills, and cushion covers can be washed in the machine, even the velvet shown here. The brand claims that they're also designed for durability, with a tight weave that protects against snags from pets or toys. I particularly like that the covers have a non-slip bottom to help them stay put, since high-traffic seats tend to get shuffled around or even knocked on the floor.

Customers' reviews rave about its roomy, pillowy cushions (they’re stuffed with a hypoallergenic microfiber), but you can get the sofa with box cushions for a more structured feel.

The couch comes in a number of sizes and configurations, and each modular piece is easy to move around. One thing to know is that the ottomans don’t attach to the sofa in the same way that the other pieces do. Storage ottomans are available for purchase, but the cushion cover on the storage ottoman can’t be fully removed for washing.

Albany Park is a brand that many of our editors have tested. See more of our reviews here.

Cozey Neptune Sofa

Neptune Sofa

Pros

  • Storage in every seat helps tame the clutter
  • Removable and washable covers
  • Easily expandable with extra pieces

Cons

  • Cushions are firmer than other sofas on this list

I love furniture that pulls double duty, and one of the best things about this Cozey sofa is that there’s storage under every seat and in the ottoman, if you choose to get one. It’s a great option for busy families who need to keep extra bedding, games, remotes, cords, and chargers out of the way until they're needed.

You can choose from nine stain-resistant, liquid-repelling fabric colors. It comes with three throw pillows, and all of the cushion covers can be removed and washed.

Cozey customers say that it’s easy to assemble, sturdy, and that people who prefer to sit upright will find it supportive and comfortable. You can expand this one with extra pieces, even adding a pull-out bed, so it can truly grow with your family.

Movie Night 3-Piece Modular Sofa

Pros

  • All covers are removable and washable
  • Seats are deep, wide, and extra soft
  • Durable fabric that our tester found cleaned up easily and resisted pet scratches

Cons

  • Cushions need fluffing periodically

If your family’s favorite hangout spot is the couch, this one is a treat. Our digital designer, Soumi Sarkar, tested Sunday’s Movie Night Sofa and, to cut to the chase, she loved it. From the 29-inch deep seat cushions to the fabric that cleaned up easily and even resisted scratches from her cat, the Movie Night Sofa delivered.

Sundays claims that its LiveLife fabric (11 colors available) is stain- and moisture-resistant, with liquids beading up and rolling off instead of soaking into the couch—a nice feature if you have babies, toddlers, pets, or a crew of teenagers that snack on the couch. You can spot clean it with soap and water, or take everything off and load it into the washing machine. Just let the covers air dry for the best results.

Otherwise, you’ll get deep and wide seats for lounging. The average sofa has a seat depth of 22 to 24 inches, but this one starts at 26, and the large size is 29 inches deep. It's also modular. Add pieces and rearrange them as your family grows, you move, or you just need a design refresh. The only issue our tester found was that the cushions, filled with plush feathers around a foam core, needed fluffing when they started to look flat.

LoveSac Sactional

Sactional

Pros

  • You can choose any seat to be a recliner
  • Nice add-ons like integrated speakers and side tables are available
  • 189 color choices

Cons

  • No white-glove delivery available

For a truly personalized sofa, the Lovesac Sactional lets you choose everything from the shape of the arms, one of 189 colors, the cushion fill, and more. Most notably, you can choose one (or all!) of the seats to be a remote-controlled recliner. I also like that the ottomans are available with storage.

No matter your living room setup, there’s a configuration that will work for you. Whether you get the loveseat for two or a sprawling seven-seater, each seat or ottoman can be rearranged in whatever shape you need. As for the covers, you can get velvet, chenille, boucle, and polyester weave, any of which are machine-washable. There’s even a top-grain leather option.

In addition to all of this, you can spring for side tables that can go in between the seats and even opt for an immersive surround-sound system built into the couch.

Commerce editor, Angel Madison, reviewed the Sactional and loves the overall design, especially the adjustable recliner she chose. You won't need extra space for that feature; the couch can sit flat against the wall while the seat slides out into a reclining position. Putting it together, however, required storing several large boxes until everything was delivered and having extra hands on hand to assemble it, which took a full afternoon.

Best Leather Couch for Families

Castlery Madison Leather Chaise Sectional Sofa

Madison Leather Chaise Sectional Sofa

Pros

  • Made of top-grain, stain-treated leather
  • Ideal for families with allergies
  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • Leather may scratch easily

Castlery’s Madison leather sofa is a beauty, and one that will probably last you a long time. It’s made with top-grain leather, which means it's been lightly sanded for a smooth look. It has also been treated to resist stains. Customers say that it’s “buttery soft” and a comfortable place to relax.

Top-grain costs a bit more than bonded leather, but it’s completely worth it. Bonded leather is made from shredded leather re-glued onto a fabric backing, from which the covers are made. It flakes off easily, leaving the bare fabric exposed, and it can make a huge mess. Considering the cost of other high-quality leather sectionals, this one made of top-grain is a good value.

Anecdotally, I had a leather sofa (not this one) when my kids were very young, and there were some definite benefits. Mostly, it was easy to clean because it didn’t absorb anything, wet or dry (or odors!). Leather is also a good pick if allergies are an issue, since it doesn’t trap dust or pet hair.

There are some downsides to owning any leather couch. Scratches inadvertently caused by pets or even your clothes tend to show up easily, especially on lighter colors. They can be gently buffed out, though.

York Slipcover Sofa

Pros

  • 109 color and fabric options, most are machine-washable
  • Cushions are constructed not to sag
  • Built-in levelers keep the couch steady on any floor

Cons

  • A few of the fabric options are dry clean only

Slipcovers have historically been used to extend the life of older pieces of furniture or give a room a budget-friendly upgrade. Pottery Barn’s slipcover sofas helped elevate the look; they have been popular since the 1980s, when they famously popularized a coastal-casual aesthetic.

The sleek York slipcover sofa comes in three sizes, plus a loveseat and chair. Pottery Barn offers two cushion fillers—high-density foam or a down blend. And to top it off, you get a whopping 109 colors and fabric options.

Spot cleaning is always an option, but since it’s a slipcover, the whole thing can be removed for a deeper clean. Most fabrics are machine-washable, but PB recommends dry cleaning a few of the velvet choices.

Two features I appreciate: The sloped arms give this slipcover couch a bit of style (it doesn’t scream “kids live here”), and the legs have built-in levelers, which come in handy on things like old hardwood floors, tiles, or rugs.

Anton Daybed

Pros

  • Made with durable Sunbrella material
  • Can double as a guest bed
  • Great for a TV room

Cons

  • More firm and structured than cloud-style sofas

The covers on this couch aren’t removable and machine-washable, but there’s a very good reason for that. Joybird has put the popular Sunbrella material used in outdoor furniture on this living room sofa. It’s stain-resistant, repels liquids, is more wear-and-tear-proof than other fabrics, and it’s easy to clean with a little soap and water.

But don't worry, these twills are still soft and comfortable. Because this is a daybed, you can use it to lounge in front of the TV (great for movie night or gaming marathons), and it doubles as a guest bed for sleepovers or holiday visitors. A total of 90 colors and fabrics are available.

The cushions don't have that sinking-in feeling, and are more sturdy than other picks on this list, but customers say that the daybed layout is what makes it ideal for relaxing. Comfort, durability, and versatility make this one a smart pick for busy families who need a spot to chill.

Calana Luxe Modular Sectional

Pros

  • Extra deep seats
  • Easy to move around
  • Comes almost fully assembled

Cons

  • Only the cushion covers are removable for washing

I wanted to be sure to include a sectional with an abundance of comfy seating for groups, and this five-seat pick from Birch Lane fit the bill. This is the section that your kids and their friends can use for an epic sleepover. Likewise, you’ll never have to worry about not having space for last-minute guests. It’s a roomy, modular sofa that can be easily reconfigured on the fly, into an L-shape, U-shape, or full square bed.

The back and seat cushion covers are removable and machine-washable, but note that the frame covers can only be spot-cleaned. However, all of the fabric for this sofa has been treated to resist stains.

These seats are extra deep—some Wayfair customers were surprised at how big the couch is—so make sure you’ve measured twice before ordering. The good news is, it's easy to move around as needed, and each piece comes fully assembled; all you have to do is attach the feet to the base by screwing them in.

Modular Cloud Couch
Now 20% Off

Pros

  • Removable cushion covers are machine-washable
  • Comes with two sets of legs for different heights
  • Easy to assemble

Cons

  • Cushions can take two days to fully expand after unboxing

If you want the convenience of ordering from Amazon, this cloud-style sectional can be delivered in a matter of days, in most cases. Choose a configuration with three to six modular seats (the three-seater with ottoman is shown here). The 26-inch deep cushions are filled with a plush foam that Amazon reviewers say gives them that cloud-like, sinking-in feeling.

It comes in seven colors, in chenille and corduroy, and all of the cushion covers are removable, so you can put them in the washing machine (but not the dryer).

Customers say the couch is easy to assemble and move around as needed, but you should note that the brand does suggest letting the cushions expand for two full days before use. I like that the sofa comes with two sets of legs that you can easily swap out for different heights (2.76 and 4.72 inches). This is helpful if you want your robot vacuum to reach under the couch.
