That contrast makes it feel intentional and layered, not overly themed," interior designer Mary Patton says. "I love checkerboard in natural materials—like a marble floor or a tonal wool rug. There are some great handmade ceramic pieces with a hand-painted checker pattern that add personality to a shelf or table. And checkerboard drapes in a muted linen? Such a chic, understated way to bring in the trend without it feeling loud."
For anyone wary of embracing this trend for fear it will become uncool in a year or two, worry not. Unlike some TikTok home trends that may feel dated once the design conversation moves on, checkerboard is here to stay.
"Much like gingham or stripes. It’s classic in the right context, and the design world keeps finding fresh ways to interpret it, whether that’s through natural stone floors, tonal textiles, or hand-painted furniture. I don’t see it going out of style anytime soon," Patton says. "The trend is here to stay. It has been around for hundreds of years. There is no better example of this than the Palace of Versailles and its Hall of Mirrors and Grand Trianon!" designer Tara Engelberg adds.

A checkerboard photo frame is a good way to ease yourself into the trend when you're unsure about committing to it with a big piece of furniture. This one holds a 4x6-inch sentimental photo and can be placed on your dresser, nightstand, or bookshelf.

"If committing to a new tile feels like a big step, try experimenting with a checkerboard rug," Engelberg advises. "Live with it for a few months to see how it feels. "I would layer this over a larger sisal or jute rug, and place an acrylic coffee table on it so as not to hide the pattern!" Engelberg adds.
