As sad as we are to part ways with summer, there's something about fall that makes us want to welcome the chillier days ahead. Though we can't put our finger on that je ne sais quoi, we have a feeling that our enthusiasm for fall has something to do with the best fall blankets. So, with record-high temperatures behind us, we have turned our attention to everything cozy, starting with throws. And rather than look around on the internet, we decided to look within our own homes to recommend tried-and-true favorites.
Between our editors and testers, we curated a tight list of tested fall blankets ranging from cashmere-adjacent picks to faux fur to organic cotton. We've done our research to ensure they are worth buying. So, with fall well underway (read: more nights in watching arguably the best flicks, including When Harry Met Sally, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Practical Magic, among others), it's time to get your home a little cozier, starting with a throw blanket. It's a low-lift, high-reward addition to your living room that's hardly a major investment. Trust us; you can't go wrong with any of these House Beautiful editor-approved picks.
If you are new to the throw blanket game, we suggest starting with something cozy, which, in our opinion, is synonymous with fuzzy. Enter mohair (or in this case, faux mohair), which has that fuzzy, shaggy look, but it won't shed all over your furniture or clothes. Digital Editor Meghan Shouse snagged this for her new New York City apartment, and couldn't be happier with it.
"I love this faux Mohair blanket. It's so soft and is the perfect size for my L-shaped sofa," she says. "I didn't want anything too eye-catching for a throw blanket, but I also didn't want something boring, so this ombré option was just beautiful for my space."
She got hers in the Baked Clay colorway, but there are six total color choices if you want something more cool-toned or neutral. The fringe at each end adds a nice textural touch. "The only issue is that my cat loves to groom it for some reason, but that's more of a 'me' problem," she adds.
Some people refuse to take the first bite of a meal in front of them until they push "play" on whatever they want to watch on TV. Other people refuse to sit on a sofa unless they have access to a throw blanket. Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner falls into the latter category.
"I just think being wrapped up in a fuzzy throw blanket is half of what makes lounging on the couch a comfy experience," she admits. "When I moved into my current apartment in the dead of summer last year, this very warm throw blanket was on extreme sale, so I bought two because I don't like to share, and this blanket is on the smaller side. That said, it is extremely cozy. It's faux shearling on one side and recycled polyester on the other (it has a silkier, less textured feel)."
Faux fur throw blankets are definitely on the rise, and Cherner got in on the trend. "I have wanted a faux fur blanket for at least two winters, and I finally got one," she exclaims. "It is my favorite thing in my apartment, which is saying a lot because I also have a Gene Davis painting from my grandmother, every hand-written card my fiancé has written me, and an air purifier that I think is responsible for my allergies completely disappearing. This blanket is absolutely gigantic, so I'm actually okay sharing it. It's also pretty heavy (it's not officially a weighted blanket, but it offers that pressurized comfort you get from a weighted blanket). The faux fur also looks and feels real to me. It's unbelievably soft that if it wasn't still 80 degrees in New York City, where I live, I'd be sleeping with it." Just get this blanket. It's that good.
Throw blankets don't purely have to be for warmth; they can also serve as a finishing touch to your home, making it feel more lived-in. This paper-thin throw from West Elm is a good example of what we mean. "I have three blankets on my bed: a waffle blanket, a down comforter, and this throw that I don't think I've ever unfolded and used," admits tester Rachel Elliott. "I got it because I thought my bed looked a little too white, and it needed some other color to warm it up a bit, and this beige blanket did the trick. It's super soft (it feels a lot like cashmere), and it's really airy. It is a good blanket for anyone who gets hot easily."
There's no such thing as too many faux fur throw blankets, and we have three on our list. Deputy Managing Commerce Editor Cristina Corvino is just as in love with this Cozy Earth find as Cherner is with her faux fur blanket. "This throw is quite possibly the softest thing I’ve ever felt. I can't wait to use it even more in the winter, since it’s big (and I don't even have the oversized version) and heavy," she says. "I can confirm that it's as cozy, comforting, and warm as the hype implies. It also machine washes and hang-dries very nicely." Bonus: It comes in a very attractive reusable zippered tote.
Anyone who hates anything that feels too seasonal, this is the fall blanket for you. "I love a fall throw blanket that doesn’t overtly scream 'autumn is here,'" admits Associate Editor Kelly Allen. "This way, I can use it year-round if I want to, but come fall, it fits right into any earthy seasonal decor. Another element that lets her use it all year is the composition of the blanket: "Since it's made of woven wool and hand-spun silk, it’s not overwhelmingly soft—but it’s not itchy or scratchy, either. It is very lightweight, which makes it ideal for wrapping yourself in and moving around the house without feeling weighed down." Her only qualm? The unboxed smell. "When the throw arrived, it did smell a bit like fresh cardboard or horse hay straight out of the box, but the scent vanished fairly quickly after," she says.
If you think that there may be too many faux fur throws on our list, you're not wrong; there are a lot. However, faux furs blankets are trending in a big way right now, and for good reason: They're so cozy.
"The throw is extremely plush, delivers the luxe look it’s meant to, and was ready for immediate use right out of the packaging,"says tester Janelle Askew. "There were no weird smells and no 'fluff up' period. It looks incredibly realistic without the guilt of real fur." She also says it feels like a step-up from former faux fur products that look and feel fake. "The channeled texture of it really elevated it beyond that 'shaggy' fur style I've typically seen when shopping for faux fur throws," she adds. As for the feel itself, Askew admits that "it is one of the softest throws I’ve ever owned. It’s thick and heavy, with a velvet reverse side that I love because it adds breathability."
Generally speaking, for some reason, the House Beautiful editors and our friends tend to gravitate towards neutral throw blankets, but Senior Commerce Editor Marina Liao is the exception. In fact, the bold color palette and matching pattern were the two elements that made her want to get this one for her apartment.
"What drew me to this blanket was the geometric weave and color combo. I love how colorful it is without it feeling overly bright, which goes well with the nature-inspired color palette I have happening in my living room," she explains. "I like to use this throw when I'm on the couch watching TV, as it keeps me warm and doesn't feel heavy."
This throw, compared to the faux fur ones on this list, isn't as silky soft, though. "The blanket is 100 percent cotton, but it's not as soft and smooth as I thought it would be from the picture online," she admits. "I think due to the way it is woven, it has a texture to it, so when you run your hands over it, you can feel the design." That said, the blanket is not scratchy and, according to Liao, feels comfortable on the skin. She adds, "I love that this is a piece I can leave out as a decorative accent piece draped over my couch or chair, too, versus hiding it in my blanket basket because it's 'ugly.' The throw is definitely NOT ugly."
Generally speaking, we like to test all the products we are recommending to House Beautiful readers, but doing so can sometimes be tricky, especially when the items are large, like a platform bed frame or sofa. Such is not the case for fall blankets, though. Admittedly, not everyone has one, but the people who do tend to love them. So, I looked into my own blanket collection and those of my fellow editors and friends to curate this list of incredibly cozy throws.
