If you're looking to upgrade your plain white walls, colorful paint is definitely an option, but if you want to go a little bigger, shop for the best removable wallpaper. If you're wondering why its ease of removal matters, allow us to explain. Wallpaper is a big commitment, so if you don't plan on installing it and living with it for the rest of your life, opt for a playful pattern that will make you happy for as long as you like it and will be easy to take off when you're over it. Removable wallpaper is great because when you are ready to swap it for something else, you don't have to worry about damaging your walls.
As for the patterns themselves, we chose ones that have the ability to completely change your space for the better. After all, wallpaper does have that magical ability to transform a room. "If you're trying to create a mood, wallpaper and a clear color palette is the place to start," Charleston, South Carolina–based painter and textile artist Rebecca Atwood says. "Patterns can create a more specific story than a single color, which allows you to really hone in on the mood you want."
Ready to discover what that mood may be? Keep scrolling for nine removable wallpaper options the House Beautiful team loves so much that a few of them are in our own homes.

"I, like so many other people trapped in their homes during the peak of the pandemic, got so sick of my apartment, so I tried to give it a little facelift with wallpaper," Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner admits. "This is my old apartment, and while I would definitely swap out a lot of the decor and the sofa, I still love the wallpaper! I put this up myself with nothing more than an X-acto knife and a squeegee (I definitely do not recommend using a makeshift squeegee like a credit card because you need to apply a lot of pressure to get the air bubbles out. Just spend the $5 and get the real thing.) The whole process took about three hours, which I consider a triumph since no one helped me," she adds. Sadly, this exact pattern is no longer available, but all of Tempaper's wallpapers can be applied the same way. "I had this wallpaper up for three full years before I moved out and had to take it down. It never peeled off—not even in the corners!" One thing to note, though: It will start to peel back from the edges if you stick it, remove it, then stick it down again when you apply it. The best way to keep it stuck to the wall for good is to place it exactly where you want it to go when you apply it. Each time you remove it, it looses its stick.

We'll be the first to say it: Toile is cool. It originated in mid-18th century France, and all of these years later, it's still popular! It's so charming and welcoming that we happen to think it would look best in an entryway. The only thing we'll say about this pattern is that you have to match up the pattern exactly when moving from panel to panel. Otherwise, enjoy this historically renowned pattern for years to come. "I love this paper. It's slightly thicker than others I've used and cuts nicely. It sticks well, but I'm still able to remove to readjust before setting," one reviewer said.
Material: Vinyl | Colors: Blue and white, purple and beige, pink and white, yellow, and white, and black and khaki | Roll Size: 16" x 78"

"I was trepidatious about using peel-and-stick wallpaper in my half-bathroom due to the moisture level, but Chasing Paper's FAQs said it was appropriate for bathrooms, so I took the leap—and I'm so glad I did," says Executive Director of Content Strategy & Growth Erin Henry. "Three years in and we've had no bubbling, fading, or any signs of mildew, even though this room does not have a window. I used one of the patterns from the nursery section and I really love the whimsy it brings to a very small space." If you plan on using it in a nursery, rest assured that it's low-VOC and -PVC and free from phthalates.
Material: Vinyl | Colors: Blue and white | Roll Size: 24" x 8' and 12" x 24" x 12'

You may not be able to tell from here, but if you get closer, you'll notice that some of the circles are filled with moons and suns—both of which have detailed faces. It comes in four colors, but we happen to think this midnight blue is the coolest. Plus, if you're not sure how many rolls you'll need, feel free to utilize AllModern's measuring tool: Just input the total square footage (multiple the width and height of your walls then multiply that number by the amount of walls you'll be covering), and AllModern will tell you how many rolls you'll need. One happy reviewer noted, "Super cute! The colors are perfect. I love that the gold illustrations have a nice subtle shine to them."
Material: Vinyl | Colors: Navy, light blue, gray, and silver | Roll Size: 27" x 20'

If you're looking at this elegant floral wallpaper pattern and thinking it looks familiar, you may have seen it before. The one and only Joanna Gaines used it in her series Mini Reni. Once she revealed where it was from, it sold out in weeks, but it's finally back. In an Instagram caption about the space, Gaines wrote "The homeowner wanted more color and pattern in the #MiniReni Dining Room, so this garden-inspired wallpaper checked the box." So, if you're looking for something similar, you can't go wrong with this JG-approved option. One reviewer said, "I definitely recommend this wallpaper. It was very reasonably priced, but is good quality feels nice and thick. A little difficult to make the strips align but the pattern is pretty forgiving if it’s not aligned perfectly."
Material: Vinyl | Colors: Evergreen, gray, and navy | Roll Size: 20.5" x 18'

Though tester Betty Ann Gilrain admits that the installation was rather difficult (she says, "Making sure the lines matched up perfectly was a challenge), the result was well worth the frustration. "When I saw there was a peel and stick version of this iconic Scalamandré wallpaper, I immediately fell in love. It completely transformed my entry in my New York City apartment," Gilrain says. "The best part? If I ever got tired of it, it is easy to swap with no damage to my walls. It is such a fun way to add personality to a space that isn't your forever home."
Material: Vinyl | Colors: Red, gray, green, navy, yellow | Roll Size: 18' x 20.5"

Chinoiserie is like toile in that both patterns originated hundreds of years ago and are considered classics by anyone with an affinity for traditionalism. Also, both patterns are highly detailed and focused on natural motifs. In toile's case, it's often bucolic landscapes, and Chinoiserie highlights realistic illustrations of anything from birds to flowers, but trees and branches are almost always present in some form or another. The only downside to Chinoiserie is that it's often extremely expensive. If you've ever pored over de Gournay's or Gracie's Instagram pages, you know that there is a lot of expertise required to create Chinoiserie, which is usually why it's so expensive. Think a few thousand for one panel. So, when we stumbled upon a beautifully accurate Chinoiserie pattern for less than $300, we had to add it to our list.
Material: Eco-conscious canvas | Colors: Multiple | Roll Size: 75" x 48'

"I purchased this peel-and-stick wallpaper for my son's bedroom with the idea that it would probably need to come down a year later as his taste and interests evolved," Executive Content Editor Jess Teves admits. "It's such a delightfully rich and colorful motif of wild animals and I love how at bedtime we were able to look around and describe what they are." Full disclosure, this exact wallpaper pattern is no longer available, but Chasing Paper has unleashed a brand-new iteration that boasts the same vibe as Teves'. "The peel-and-stick is very tricky to apply and this was challenging for my husband—lining up the animals proved to be a difficult task. As an aside, it's held up extraordinarily well as we're now three years later and not even the edges have peeled up. Definitely a recommend from me, especially in a semi-transient space like a kids' room," Teves adds.
Material: Poly-woven fabric | Colors: Multiple | Roll Size: 2' x 4'

Several of my fellow House Beautiful editors, writers, and I tested the aforementioned removable wallpaper patterns in our homes for a period of at least a few weeks (some of us though, have lived with them for several years) to give us enough time to review them properly. In either case, it's a real testament to the patterns' durability and longevity. It's also worth noting that a few of us started with removable wallpaper from other brands or marketplaces and had terrible experiences with application, appearance, and post-application results, so we left these options off the list because we want to recommend only the products we really love.
That said, no product is perfect, so we did not hold back on pointing out some cons for shoppers to consider, as this is the most realistic way to purchase products. It's up to you if the pros outweigh the cons for you and vice versa. As for the rest of the products on our list (the ones we did not test at home), we looked for options at our trusted brands and retailers. We picked out removable wallpaper that's stylish, then read through every single review to see what customers had to say about the pattern. We only selected the ones with the most positive feedback and highest ratings.

Roll Size: This is perhaps the most important factor to consider when buying removable wallpaper. Before you checkout on the retailer's site, make sure you know exactly how many rolls you need to cover your entire space. Trust me; nothing is more annoying than getting started on the application process to realize you ran out of wallpaper with plenty of wall to go. Most of the brands on our list feature a roll calculator that lets you input your measurements, and it spits out the exact number of rolls you'll need. You may even want to get one extra roll to account for any mistakes that happen during the application process.
Repeat Pattern: If this is not your first rodeo with removable wallpaper, you probably don't need a warning about repeat patterns. Otherwise, be on the lookout! Repeat patterns are patterns that, as its name suggests, repeat, so making sure the lines match up exactly is key. If they don't you'll be able to tell that something looks a little off. Luckily, removable wallpaper is easy to reposition if needed, so if you didn't get it perfect the first time, you can always try again. Just know that if you full unpeel a panel, it will lose a little bit of its stick and may peel after some time.
Material: There are a lot of materials on offer when it comes to wallpaper. There's polyester, nylon, silk, rayon, and canvas, but when it comes to removable peel-and-stick wallpaper, you'll mostly see vinyl patterns because vinyl is a super durable material that won't rip or stretch.

Unlike wallpapers that require professional installation, removable wallpapers are a one-size-fits-all situation, which is great if the pattern you got happens to work for your space, but if not, no peel-and-stick wallpaper will stay put. Here's why: Removable wallpaper is meant for super-smooth clean walls, so if yours has a bit of texture or stands under layers of oil-based paint, it may not work. Not to mention, if you need to reposition your wallpaper after you've already stuck it onto the walls, it may start peeling because the adhesive is only so strong. Think of removable wallpaper like a sticker you'd pop on your rear windshield; if you take it off and try to restick it, the edges will start to peel back. It doesn't mean it's going to fall off completely, but it won't be as secure as it did on the first try.

If you apply removable wallpaper correctly, it definitely does last. I am speaking from experience: I put my Tempaper peel-and-stick wallpaper up in the early days of the pandemic and enjoyed it for three years. If you want to make sure you do it right, make sure you read the instructions before removing the adhesive backing. It also can't hurt to watch a tutorial video that explains exactly how to apply it. Another thing to keep in mind is the room in which your placing your wallpaper. Some materials don't like moisture, (think silk, canvas, or anything that isn't traditionally waterproof), so if you plan on installing removable wallpaper in a bathroom, make sure the pattern you like will work in a relatively humid and warm space.

When it comes to picking out the best (and affordable) pieces for any space, including her own, Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner has been reviewing all things home for nearly eight years, having access to more than a few stylish samples and working with countless interior designers and experts on what makes a product worthy in the home. Not to mention, she's been on a never-ending quest to maximize the style and look of her own home, so you can trust that she has done her homework to find the best and most beloved pieces on the market. She's covered everything from the where to buy wallpaper to slow decorating, which is all about buying with intention.
For this story, Cherner and several other House Beautiful editors spent weeks, and even years, applying and living with more than a few top-rated removable wallpapers to determine the best options on the market right now to help find the best ones for you.
