Want to make your bedroom feel bigger and more luxurious? Start with the bed.
Making a bedroom feel more spacious doesn’t have to involve major changes, from knocking down walls to sacrificing valuable storage or getting rid of an occasional chair. But there’s a much simpler place to start: your layout.
Moving your bed is one of the quickest ways to make your bedroom feel bigger – and according to Kunal Trehan, interior designer & founder of Touched Interiors, it could also help your room feel more luxurious too.
Where to place your bed for a room that feels bigger and more luxurious
Position your bed against the wall opposite the entrance, with a clear view as you walk into the room.
'In a small bedroom, one of the most effective tricks is to place the bed against the wall that gives you the clearest, longest sightline as you enter the room. Ideally, you want to see the bed head-on, rather than immediately seeing the side of it, as this creates a much calmer and more considered first impression,' says Kunal.
'Where possible, centre the bed on that wall rather than automatically pushing it into a corner. It may sound counterintuitive when space is tight, but a centred bed with even a modest amount of breathing room on either side can make the room feel more balanced, symmetrical and ultimately more luxurious. Luxury bedrooms tend to feel composed rather than crammed.'
Kunal also recommends avoiding placing your bed directly in front of a window, as this can block natural light and make the room feel darker.
'The real trick is to think less about fitting the bed wherever it physically goes and more about creating a strong focal point,' he says. 'A small bedroom can feel far more expensive when the bed looks deliberately positioned rather than simply squeezed in.'
Other ways to make a small bedroom feel more spacious
Moving your bed isn’t the only way to make a small bedroom feel bigger. A few thoughtful space-saving changes can also make the room feel more open and balanced.
'If bedside space is limited, use slim wall-mounted tables, floating shelves or pendant lights instead of sacrificing the symmetry. You still get that hotel-suite feeling without filling valuable floor space,' Kunal suggests.
