The best front doors that prove kerb appeal starts with colour and character

These front doors from real House Beautiful homes are so stylish, they made us do a double take

Put simply, the front door is a home's first chance to make an impression: not simply in how it looks, but how it feels, from the very first glance.

The boundary between outside and in, front doors set the tone for the schemes and dynamics that follow. In House Beautiful homes, that character might come from a soft heritage shade that sits comfortably on a period street of terraced houses, or a confident pop of colour that signals a bold, individual style within.

A front door does more than welcome you home; it allows a house to take its place on a street, contributing to the collective soul of its surroundings. The most memorable ones strike a balance between context and character, complementing their setting while still standing out for all the right reasons.

The key to striking this balance is choosing a front door that feels unmistakably yours – a colour, finish or detail that reflects the people within. From bespoke signage and decorative glazing to rich, sumptuous palettes and statement floral wreaths, these thoughtful touches are what shape a home’s all-important first impression.

Chosen by real homeowners for their charm and individuality, these front doors go beyond trends. They’re lasting choices, designed to welcome, to express and to set the scene for the life happening just over the threshold.

The front door was no afterthought for colour and budget whizz Sheree Millington's pretty Margate home. As the first thing guests set eyes on, she wanted it to make an impact, painting it a chic, swimming pool blue and commissioning bespoke sign-writing for the fanlight from Hermetic Sign Co.

The reverse-gilded lettering is evocative of Victorian seaside sweet shops and shopfront fonts, making it a thoughtful nod to Margate’s coastal heritage – and, of course, perfectly at home on a Victorian terrace. While Sheree confesses it was one of her more extravagant renovations, she knows she will live with and love it for years to come.

Cool pink with moody accents

While the interior of Sophie Robinson's Sussex farmhouse might be colour and pattern galore, her front door plays it that little bit cooler, and we're in love. Still exuding femininity and confidence, she's accessorised her true pink door with sassy, black hardware which perfectly matches the black walls and window frames either side.

Despite desperately wishing to replace the PVC frames with traditional wooden ones, Sophie decided to save the landfill – and her bank account – by painting them instead, disguising their true identity. As far as we're concerned, this cool combo (and the benefit of saving £20k) makes the sacrifice well worth it.

Leave it to interior designer Natasha Lyon to make a statement that, while oozing 'wow' factor, still feels utterly inviting. Apparently, it was this very doorway – wide enough for a double buggy – that made Natasha fall in love with the house.

Her cheerful blue door, accessorised with a dried spring wreath, speaks to the hub of creativity within – we especially love the way the Victorian mosaic tiles beneath unify the scheme of azure with rich, earthy tones.

A whimsical creative with an impressive eye for colour, it's no wonder textile designer Annika Reed chose this joyful – but still elegant – butter yellow shade for the front door of her Georgian cottage in Frome.

Either side, hanging baskets bring in textural greenery, while the stained glass door panes are bespoke, designed by Annika to mirror the curves of the staircase and the colours in the hallway. You can get a closer look here.

Pillar box red and a box of pink blooms

Nothing makes an entrance quite like a classic red door: bold, rich and full of character, it anchors the brick frontage of this Victorian terraced cottage, which was built for workers in Stroud’s wool and textile mills. Fashion designers and homeowners Alice Begg and Robbie Humphries have honoured this heritage with traditional brass hardware, setting a welcoming, assured tone upon arrival.

For the pair, part of the fun is in the contrast – their seemingly 'safe' (though no less lovely) façade is entirely subverted by the creative and colourful home they've crafted within, which feels more akin to the vibrant patterned clothes they sell. The colourful flower box spilling over the sill is guests' first clue to what awaits.
