I urge you to strap yourself in because decorating with dark and dramatic colours can feel utterly thrilling.

They’re bold, daring and uncompromising and, when you get them right, they create the most incredible cocooning atmosphere. These are the hues that invite you to retreat, unwind and relax – like being wrapped in a big comforting blanket (while managing to look sophisticated at the same time).

I know the doubt quickly creeps in. You worry that although they may be gorgeously cosy in winter, come spring they will feel too heavy. The answer is not to think seasonally but intentionally: where in your home do you want that enveloping feeling?

Hallways are another place to consider a deeply pigmented shade, and I’ll let you in on a little-known designer secret: when you step from a darkly decorated area into a lighter room, you create the illusion of even more space.

Find the right shade

If you want a welcoming vibe, look for deep shades with a warm undertone, such as chocolate brown, aubergine or deep forest green. To stop things feeling too sombre, add contrast. A pop of bright colour lifts the whole scheme, while a bold pattern brings in energy and playfulness.

Go tactile

To prevent darker walls from feeling severe, layer texture for softness. Shaggy Moroccan rugs, chunky knitted throws, glazed pottery, rustic timbers and buttery-soft velvets will all add richness and interest.

Layer that lighting

Consider lighting your new best friend. Dark walls love the glow that comes from lamps, wall lights and perhaps even a sparkling chandelier. Metallic accents shimmer beautifully against an inky backdrop, so gilt frames, mirrors and glass accessories also work a treat.

Moody hues are not a fleeting trend. They are a powerful design tool to create atmosphere and drama. When you use them with confidence and intention, they will always feel elevated and luxurious.
