In the height of summer, there's always someone looking out of the window wishing it were cool enough for a woolly jumper. These cosy-loving, autumn-obsessed types count down the days until crisp mornings, candlelight and darker evenings. Luckily for them, there's an interiors trend that lets them embrace all of that months early.
Forget waiting until October – Summerween is already taking over the internet. The viral trend combines Halloween's spooky aesthetic with sunshine-filled styling, proving it's never too early for pumpkins, ghosts and gothic-inspired decor.
Officially, Summerween falls on 22 June, but for die-hard Halloween fans, the trend lasts all summer long. While some celebrate with horror films and spooky storytelling on balmy evenings, others use it as the perfect excuse to decorate with moodier colours, candlelight and cosy touches long before autumn arrives.
But what does this mean for our interiors? 'What's really interesting about Summerween is how quickly it's moving beyond social media and into people's homes,' says Victoria Robinson, style and trend expert at Hillarys.
'We've seen searches for Summerween increase by 200 per cent over the past month alone, which suggests this is no longer just an online trend, it's becoming a genuine cultural moment.'
So how can you style Summerween at home without it making it look like you've mixed up your seasons? Is there a way to embrace the magic of Halloween without it looking like you've walked onto the set of Beetlejuice? We asked experts for their top tips on how to decorate Summerween-style at home.
1) Embrace an autumnal colour palette
'Rather than traditional black and orange, I'd look at warmer, sun-faded shades like burnt peach, terracotta, olive green, plum and dusty lilac. They still have a slightly mysterious feel but work beautifully during the summer months,' says Victoria.
2) Choose moody, atmospheric lighting
'Candles, hurricane lanterns, festoon lights and warm LED lighting can add a subtle spooky mood without feeling overly Halloween-themed,' says Kunal Trehan, interior designer & founder of Touched Interiors.
3) Lean into nostalgia
'A lot of the appeal of Summerween comes from nostalgia. It's about recreating that excitement we feel around seasonal traditions growing up, whether that's a spooky film night, themed treats or decorating the house with little nods to Halloween favourites,' Victoria explains.
Now is the time to get out those old sentimental items – perhaps a book on witches you loved as a kid or that Addams Family poster you've been meaning to put up again.
4) Choose Halloween motifs – but don't go overboard
'Rather than skeletons and novelty decorations, incorporate bats, moons, stars or dark botanical arrangements through artwork, cushions or table decor,' says Kunal. Here, consider going for Halloween-adjacent motifs.
5) Create a gothic outdoor space
For a more subtle Summerween look, consider leaning into gothic elements in your outdoor space. 'Deep burgundy flowers, trailing foliage, black planters and candlelight can create a mysterious atmosphere that feels elegant enough for summer evenings,' says Kunal.
'The most successful Summerween interiors don't look like Halloween arrived early. Instead, they capture the mood and magic of the season while remaining stylish, relaxed and appropriate for summer living.'
