The way we're painting our homes have changed. Certainly since COVID-19, the pandemic has made us all reconsider our very own sanctuaries now that we're now spending so much more time in it.

Paint sales certainly soared during lockdown, bland walls or rooms in desperate need of a spruce up had a makeover, and we began obsessing about the perfect backdrop for all of those Zoom video calls.

Our homes, now visible to all, are becoming even more of a reflection of our personal style and paint is an easy way to transform and bring a fresh feel to a space.

So what's new? We're experimenting with colour in the home like never before by using new techniques, moving away from the traditional model of painted walls and off-white ceilings and woodwork.

Mylands, Britain's oldest family-owned paint manufacturer and holders of the Royal Warrant, have shared some new trends in paint treatments which challenges the traditional rules of decorating an interior.

Head to toe colour: This is a full immersion of colour in the home, choosing one shade for the ceiling, walls and woodwork.

Accent ceilings: Inverting the traditional formula of painted walls and white ceilings, the ceiling is becoming the hero, often combined with paler tones or off-white walls to make the room feel larger.

Tonal woodwork: Choosing the same colour or a similar tone brings interest without it being jarring.

Accent woodwork: Rather than trying to make the woodwork disappear, selecting a standout colour offers a fresh take on a painted interior.

The trends cater to those who like to experiment with colour and those who are perhaps introducing colour into their living space for the first time. For example, for those more confident with colour, painting a room entirely one shade, from skirting to window to ceiling, will feel immersive and modern. Meanwhile, an accent ceiling or painted woodwork is an easy way to introduce colour into the home without it feeling overbearing or having to commit to an entire scheme.

'Our homes are now multi-functional – they are spaces for relaxing, working, exercising, and socialising virtually or in real life – and paint is an excellent way to update them without breaking the bank,' says Managing Director, Dominic Myland. 'Our paints are timeless, but with a little bit of imagination the impact of a new paint technique can be remarkable.'
