Dining alfresco sounds idyllic in theory: chilled drinks, a warm evening and dinner in the open air. In reality, once the sun has spent all afternoon heating the paving, metal furniture and glass doors, a small balcony or patio can start to feel more like an oven than a relaxing retreat.

A little forward planning can make all the difference. From creating shade and improving airflow to choosing cooler colours, fabrics and surfaces, these simple styling tricks will help keep your balcony comfortable, inviting and ready for long summer dinners.

1. Start with shade

A retractable awning, parasol or outdoor curtain can deliver the quickest drop in perceived heat by stopping sunlight before it reaches the floor, furniture and glass doors. Position the shade to block the strongest afternoon sun rather than simply covering the table, as surrounding surfaces will continue radiating heat even after the sun has moved on.

2. Improve airflow

Arrange furniture so that it does not obstruct the prevailing breeze. Open-weave pieces, such as this set from Wayfair, will allow air to circulate more freely.

On still, humid evenings, an outdoor fan can make the space feel more comfortable, although it will not lower the air temperature. For a stronger cooling effect, consider an outdoor misting fan.

3. Think about surfaces

Dark stone, concrete and metal absorb heat throughout the day and release it long after sunset. Timber deck tiles can make hot flooring more comfortable underfoot, while throws, seat pads and cushions help cover the parts of chairs that come into direct contact with skin. Lighter-coloured furniture also tends to stay cooler than black pieces.

Tom Douglas, senior gardening buyer at Cherry Lane Garden Centres, says: 'Wooden pieces tend to stay much cooler than metal ones. If using metal furniture, placing it out of direct sunlight can also help maintain a more pleasant temperature throughout the day.'

4. Consider your cushions

Outdoor performance fabrics on cushions and upholstery offer more than water repellency and quick-drying properties. They are also designed to resist fading and damage caused by sunlight, helping outdoor furniture stay looking good for longer.

Colour choice can also affect comfort. Tom explains: 'Synthetic fibres like polyester and acrylic tend to trap warmth, making seating areas feel much hotter during warm weather. Opting for lighter-coloured fabrics with heat-reflecting properties can make a noticeable difference.'

For cushions that move between indoors and out, breathable natural fabrics such as cotton or linen can feel cooler against the skin, although they should be brought inside in wet weather.

5. Bring in greenery

Plants can also alter the microclimate. Tom explains: 'Plants themselves can play a vital role in cooling outdoor spaces. Not only do they provide shade, but they also release moisture through a process called transpiration. As this moisture evaporates, it helps reduce the surrounding temperature, acting like a natural air conditioner.'

Tall, leafy varieties can provide dappled shade and make the space feel fresher, particularly when grouped around the perimeter rather than crowded around the table.

6. Add an outdoor rug

An outdoor rug can make hot paving more comfortable underfoot while adding colour, texture and definition to a compact dining area.

Choose a pale design, as darker colours are more likely to absorb heat in direct sunlight. Look for a weather-resistant, quick-drying rug made for outdoor use, and avoid thick styles that may retain moisture. Lightweight and made from waterproof fabric, this Talking Tables outdoor rug adds colour and is easy to store away in the winter.

Skip candles, tabletop grills and heat-producing lamps on very warm evenings. For a glow late into the evening, consider a solar or rechargeable LED lamp to add to the atmosphere without adding noticeable warmth. Cox & Cox's range of outdoor lamps are perfect for adding a joyful dose of colour.
