Bringing indoor plants into your home is one of the easiest ways to add a touch of nature to your interiors. But did you know that some houseplants do more than just look beautiful? Many varieties are also known for their air-purifying qualities.
While no plant can completely eliminate dust (sadly, there’s no escaping the vacuum cleaner), certain species can help improve air quality by trapping particles and absorbing toxins. ‘This process is called phytoremediation, where a plant’s natural mechanisms work to clean the air around you,’ explains Calum Maddock, gardening and plants expert at HomeHow.

With their bold, arching leaves, spider plants bring instant style to any room — and they’re also among the easiest houseplants to look after. ‘They are most effective at removing formaldehyde, toluene, and carbon monoxide from the air,’ says Calum.
Place them in kitchens, living rooms, and offices where these pollutants are more likely to be found. ‘They are also incredibly easy to propagate, allowing you to quickly fill your home with these natural air filters,’ he adds.
Fresh flowers may bring soft, natural beauty into a home, but peace lilies go one step further by combining style with function. ‘Peace lilies have the ability to absorb mould spores as well as other pollutants in the air,’ Calum explains. ‘They can also absorb harmful acetone vapours, which can be found in household cleaners, paint, and nail varnish removers.’
Thanks to their love of humidity, peace lilies are especially well-suited to bathrooms, where they not only thrive but also help keep the air cleaner and fresher.

Ivy plants are ideal for adding a soft, romantic touch to your interiors, thanks to their trailing stems and delicate leaves. ‘Its dense, waxy leaves have a large surface area that traps airborne particles,’ Calum says. ‘English ivy can remove octane, benzene, trichloroethylene, and toluene.’
They look particularly striking in hanging planters or draped over shelves, but make sure to place them in bright, direct sunlight to keep them healthy and thriving.
With their glossy, oversized leaves, rubber plants bring instant drama and elegance to any room — while also helping to filter out pollutants.
‘For this plant to be as effective as possible, it's important to regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth or mist them on a daily basis,’ Calum explains. ‘This will remove the collected dust and also keep the plant's pores open.’
Rubber plants also come in a variety of striking colourways, including deep burgundy, soft pink, and cream-edged leaves, making them a versatile choice for both air purification and decorative impact.
If you want to bring greenery into your home without the hassle, the ZZ plant is the perfect choice. Hardy and drought-tolerant, it requires very little care.
‘The ZZ plant is an ideal choice for those who are new to houseplants or who may not have a lot of time for maintenance, as it thrives on neglect while still working to clean your air,’ Calum says.
However, give your ZZ plant just a touch of attention — by keeping it in bright, indirect light and watering sparingly — and it can grow up to four feet tall.
With dense foliage, Boston ferns will add instant texture and lush greenery to your home. ‘They excel at removing formaldehyde from the air, which is a common pollutant in household products like chipboard and adhesives,’ Calum says. ‘The dense foliage of a Boston fern helps to humidify the air, which can alleviate dry skin and respiratory irritation.’
These ferns thrive in humid spaces, so try placing them in a bathroom or a bright alcove where they’ll receive plenty of indirect sunlight.
Snake plants are tropical houseplants with a bold, architectural look, featuring broad leaves that are excellent at trapping dust particles. ‘It is one of the few plants that can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms,’ Calum says. ‘It also effectively removes a range of toxins, including formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene.’
Although snake plants can tolerate darker corners, they’ll grow best when placed on a nightstand or side table near a window, where they can get the light they need to thrive.
