Looking for an easy way to add colour, structure and year-round interest to your outdoor space? Shrubs are one of the smartest plants you can grow in pots, whether you have a compact balcony, a patio, a front doorstep or a small garden corner to fill.
Container gardening is fun, flexible and instantly rewarding, and potted shrubs are especially effective because they create impact straight away. Unlike short-lived seasonal flowers, many shrubs provide long-lasting colour, texture and shape, with some earning their keep right through the year.
They are practical, too. Shrubs grown in containers are often easier to manage, as they tend to stay more compact and grow more slowly, needing only occasional pruning, shaping and feeding. Pots also let you control the soil type more easily, so you can grow shrubs that may not naturally suit the conditions in your garden. And when the weather turns, whether it's a heatwave or a frost, you can move containers into a more sheltered spot for extra protection.
To find out which varieties are best, we asked Paul Parker, gardening expert at plants and perennials specialist J.Parker's, to share his tips and top recommendations for shrubs that thrive in pots and bring lasting life and colour to your outdoor space.
‘Buxus sempervirens, commonly known as box hedging, is an extremely resilient and versatile shrub,’ says Paul. ‘It’s happy in shade, suitable for moist soil, and can even survive in dry ground when established. Its slow growth makes it ideal for a formal garden, requiring minimal shaping to maintain its dense, green foliage.’
‘Euonymus fortune, also known as spindle tree, is a beautiful evergreen shrub available in a range of varieties and colours, such as "Harlequin", which features unique dappled green and white foliage,’ recommends Paul. ‘This dwarf shrub is ideal for pots, and its foliage provides year-round visual interest as the foliage shifts colour through the seasons.’
‘Viburnum tinus is an evergreen shrub that produces fragrant dome-shaped blooms, beginning as pink buds and emerging into pure white flowers, followed by dark blue-black fruit. It flowers from December through spring, providing up to six months of flowering, while its foliage provides year-round structure.’
‘Hydrangea macrophylla is a mophead variety that produces a striking array of colours, from classic whites to vibrant pink or blue, depending on the variety. This lower-growing hydrangea is ideal for pots and provides months of flowers through summer, perfect for both garden displays or cut for flower arrangements.’
‘This compact lavender produces beautifully fragrant purple flowers on green-grey spikey stems. An English garden favourite, its manageable size makes it perfect for smaller pot displays, while its fragrant blooms make it a great choice to spread scent through the garden and attract pollinators.’
‘Ceanothus is a fantastic shrub with several award-winning varieties, like “Repens”, with glossy foliage and densely compact panicles that burst into bloom. Known for its vigorous spreading habit, planting ceanothus in pots is an effective way to keep it contained and manageable, while still providing bold colour and impact,’ says Paul.
‘Choisya ternata is a hardy, compact shrub that produces vivid, glossy foliage. It is renowned for its reliable performance, stable colour and form, and strong resistance to pests and diseases making it an excellent beginner-friendly choice,’ recommends Paul.
‘Skimmia japonica is an evergreen dome-shaped shrub that grows to a perfect height of 75cm, making it ideal for container planting. It produces plenty of colour with its small red berries from April, adding seasonal colour and attracting butterflies to the garden. These shrubs grow extremely well in pots and are perfect for cut flowers as well.’
‘Hebe is an essential choice for gardeners wanting a structured display with plenty of foliage and colour. There are hundreds of hebe varieties in varying colours, all perfectly compact for growing in pots and containers. It is also highly attractive to pollinators, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens,’ says Paul.
