Some of the most popular interior trends could be negatively affecting your property value by up to 52 per cent, a new study has found.
While scene-stealing colours, bold kitchen cupboards and statement fittings are some of the most-loved interior trends at the moment, Rated People found they can be off-putting to potential buyers.
The team at Rated People, a marketplace connecting homeowners with quality local tradespeople, analysed almost one million jobs posted on their website, and conducted a 51-question survey to over 1,000 homeowners and over 600 tradespeople around the country.
As part of their new Home Improvement Trends Report 2020, the study analysed what people looked for in a new home. Despite its popularity on Instagram, the research found that rooms painted in dark blue and grey are most likely to put off potential buyers from putting down an offer.
Elsewhere, they found that houses with just a shower and no bath could devalue properties by 43 per cent, while painted floorboards were also less favoured by house hunters (devaluing homes by 35 per cent).
'We know from the many completed projects in our community that dark and bold colours can look great, whether they're used on walls, ceilings, kitchen cupboards or window frames,' says Adrienne Minster, CEO of Rated People. 'But when it comes to selling, it's a good idea to stay up-to-date with the features that buyers are looking for because the trends that were adding value just two to three years ago might now be devaluing properties.'
