A downstairs toilet, built-in storage and separate living spaces are among the most popular property trends, according to a new poll.

Buyers have revealed what they look for in a new home – and what puts them off – in a new study commissioned by Independent Network powered by VEKA. The poll of 2,000 adults found a home office area and a good energy efficiency rating also gets a big thumbs up, as do alcove bookshelves, freestanding bathtubs and a lawned garden.

Colour appears to be a significant factor when it comes to how a property is perceived by potential buyers – inside and out – as 77 per cent argue this is one of the most important aspects of home décor. Whilst 53 per cent actively keep an eye on the latest home style trends.

And according to the research, almost a fifth of adults are looking to buy a new house within the next six months.

But the study, which was carried out via OnePoll, also found 58 per cent browse property websites and apps just to see what's out there – despite not 'officially' looking for a new home.

The likes of wood burners and pink rooms – both of which have been very popular in recent years – haven't been viewed quite so favourably in the poll. Homes with tiled countertops, open-plan layouts, artificially turfed gardens and rose gold taps also hold little appeal. And it turns out a lack of plug sockets and word art on walls gets a thumbs down too.
