A rare opportunity has arisen for Bowie fans, as the property that housed Ziggy Stardust before he rocketed to global fame is now up for sale.

The property, which the singer called home for about a year, is located in the London borough of Bromley. However, when David Bowie – then better known as David Robert Jones – and his family moved here in 1953, Bromley was still part of Kent, before it was incorporated into London in 1965.

The modest end-of-terrace house situated on quiet Canon Road features two bedrooms, one bathroom and a private garden. When Bowie lived here aged six, he was a while away from becoming the famous starman, but it’s not just him who has skyrocketed since then.

At £449,500, the Victorian property is just below the average house price in Bromley, but in 1953, the average house price in the UK was just £1,884, which equals roughly £45,000 in today’s money.

'This house has been in my family for a long period of time,' the current owner, Victoria Bulford, tells House Beautiful. 'When my grandparents went to view the property many moons ago, they met with Mr and Mrs Jones of 106 Canon Road and took along their six-year-old son – my Dad – who remembers clearly playing in the backyard with David Bowie whilst the adults were inside. I do know that David Bowie’s childhood bedroom was what is now the upstairs bathroom.

'We do still have the original legal documents, which were signed by both my grandfather and David Bowie's father, Mr Jones, which I will forward onto the new owners of 106 Canon Road.'

What's more, the next owner will be able to apply for a commemorative blue plaque testifying to Bowie's residence, which can add value to the property. One criteria for a blue plaque set out by English Heritage is that at least 20 years must have passed since a candidate's death – which will apply from 10 January 2036.

The property steeped in music history is now available to buy from Leaders via rightmove.com.
