As well as making sure your bedroom is styled to perfection, it's important that your bed meets your practical needs, too.
Having a mattress that’s comfortable and supportive can take your sleep from average to hotel-level, and an easy way to upgrade it – rather than replacing it, which requires considerable investment – is by introducing a mattress topper.
If you're ready to add a touch of luxe to your sleep set up, then these are our top picks:
We all like to snuggle up differently, so the main thing to think about when shopping for a mattress topper is the position you tend to drift off or wake up in.
If you're a side sleeper – or suffer from backache – then you may want to consider a supportive mattress topper made from memory foam. It’s not the most breathable design though, so if you’re after something cooling, we’d suggest trying an alternative.
Tend to wake up face down? Then consider a feather and down-filled design. They're a great buy if your mattress is too firm, as while they don't bring lots of depth, they will add much-needed softness. You generally can’t machine wash these but spot cleaning will keep your mattress topper fresh and fluffing it up regularly will maintain its comfort.
For an allergy-friendly mattress topper, try microfibre or hollow fibre. They can flatten more quickly than other styles but they tend to bring a similar sink-in softness as you get with feather and down.
A panel of testers switched up their usual bedding for three weeks to trial the market-leading mattress toppers and find out what they were like to sleep on, night after night. They then shared feedback on how comfortable, supportive and breathable each one was, as well as considering the overall design.
In the lab, we conducted our own tests to assess how each product fitted, how smooth it felt under a bed sheet and how well distributed the filling was.

Doze off to sweet and sustainable dreams with this eco memory foam topper – its cover is made from bamboo, which is naturally hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial and machine washable.
The filling was comfortable to sleep on, responding well to our panel’s bodies, right down to supporting their hands and feet. Its adjustable straps meant it fitted most mattresses well too, barring the occasional stray corner, and it was quiet to sleep on.
It wasn’t breathable enough for all our testers, but if you’re after something cosy, then grab your favourite sleep spray and snuggle up.

You don’t need to go on holiday to enjoy a five-star sleep – this topper's combination of foam and springs, which is often the go-to for hoteliers, makes it indulgently comfortable to sleep on.
It’s a little on the large side, so not the easiest to store, but it was a hit with our panel. It’s also got some standout eco-credentials; it’s manufactured in the UK from recycled materials and foam that’s free of polluting substances.

If you’re particularly conscious of the materials you’re bringing into your sleep set up, then this mattress topper may pique your interest, as it’s made from wool that’s naturally hypoallergenic, flame-retardant and mould, mildew and dust mite resistant.
It’s a snuggly one to sleep on, too – some testers did find it too hot, but our panel scored it highly and said they would turn to it over winter for added warmth.
It’s not a thick design but still added softness, and it fitted securely with great wool distribution throughout.

Between a fan and this mattress topper, you should be able to enjoy a cool sleep set up, even on the hottest nights. Our panel tried it out during a heatwave and still said it improved the quality of their sleep, as they drifted off easily and there was no overheating.
It's hypoallergenic, machine-washable, easy to store and affordable, while still offering high-end comfort. It came up a little smaller in size than the mattress we tested it on, but its generous straps secured it in place. Sounds dreamy to us – yes, pun intended.

Sink in and slumber on a bed of feathers with this topper. Our panel liked how comfortable it made their mattress, adjusting to their body with the ideal amount of padding and moulding.
It was notably warm though, and you can’t machine wash it, but the fluff-filled design is certainly an indulgent bedroom addition for those who crave comfort and cosiness.

If you’re looking for a mattress topper that ticks all the comfort boxes without turning to feathers, this Emma number claims to be 100 per cent vegan. It also has two sides – one for firm sleep enthusiasts and one for those who like something a little softer. You can even open it up to remove the foam and tailor the level of support, making it ideal for couples who have different slumber ideals. Hello sweet nothings, goodbye mattress squabbles.
Its versatility and quality were an instant hit with our panel, who said they ‘loved the design’ and even more importantly, ‘slept great’. It doesn’t have straps, though, so it was slightly less secure than some of the other options we tested.

Consisting of one polyester layer for support and a zip-off top layer that can go in the washing machine, this thick topper will bring softness to any bed.
Our panel’s experience was mixed – some loved the sink-in style while others wanted more support – so it largely depends on what your priority is. It's lightweight though and straps keep it secure on even the deepest of mattresses.
It did come up a little small on our test mattress and it wasn’t the most breathable, but if you’re after that sumptuous engulfing feeling, this one can’t be beaten.

Nobody wants to be responsible for their guests needing to book a chiropractor appointment in the morning. Thankfully, this lightweight, easy breezy mattress topper can be rolled up and stored away when it’s not in use, so it’s perfect for guest bedrooms or to add a little luxe comfort to your sofa bed. Our panel also found it to be ‘very comfortable’ and ‘the right mix of soft and supportive’, so no judgment here if you decide to keep it for yourself.
A couple of minor niggles to consider before hitting purchase: our panel did find it to be quite hot on toasty summer nights and they would have preferred if it came with straps for more security.
