An Edwardian house in rural Suffolk has been transformed with a contemporary extension, thanks to the creative vision of architects Project Orange. Homeowners Janey Auchincloss and her husband John were thrilled with the result – the new addition now houses an open-plan kitchen and dining area, an office, and, hidden inside a pod structure, a guest bathroom and utility room.
The kitchen features a subtle mix of materials – oak units and a white Everhot stove, with white brick walls and exposed ceiling joists.
The French copper sink and reclaimed brass taps were sourced by Lavenham Joinery.
Botanical themes run throughout the house, including on a striking set of plates displayed in the kitchen.
The new extension houses an open-plan kitchen with a concrete-topped table from a local shop, A G Lifestyle in Sudbury. 'It's a lovely, light, bright space, but we've used dark Invisible Green paint by Little Greene on the back wall for extra impact,' Janey says.
A big kingfisher-blue velvet sofa from Swoon in the living room sits alongside a huge painting of Ironbridge done by Janey's youngest daughter, Lucy, for her GCSE art exam. The burnt-orange cushions from John Lewis & Partners mirror the coppery tones on the outside of the cottage, and in colours of the plants outdoors.
Janey's large collection of succulents moves between indoors and out with the seasons.
Black and white graphic tiles bring a contemporary edge to the period feel in the bathroom. A houseplant in a natural woven hanging basket adds a further green touch to complement the dark-coloured panels.
The bedroom has a dramatic feel inspired by the dark panelling and luxurious bed, with oversized floral print bedlinen and sumptuous velvet cushions.
Bisected by paths in black brick, the garden has a modern flavour, with jungly planting in verdant green, rich coral, orange and blue. The Corten-steel reflection tank contains very still, dyed black water.
