An old garage with a tool shed above it has been completely transformed by photographer Julia Bostock and her husband Ben Burdet. After an extension and renovations, it's now a gorgeous, characterful home where she also runs her business. A rustic feel marries with the building's former incarnation and is a relaxed space for living and working.

Large-scale living

The main room is a lofty, double-height studio with exposed whitewashed walls, structural timber beams, and a mezzanine with a glass partition. Furniture has been kept minimal with a large white metal table and assorted chairs.

Industrial style pendant lights hang between the exposed structural beams, while windows have been added in the roof to increase natural daylight.

New from old

A courtyard was enclosed within a frame of glulam (glued laminated timber) beams to create an extra room: arched bookshelves mark the original doorway into the house.

Textured raw materials such as the original brickwork, which is still visible in places, and the poured concrete floor give the space an industrial feel that's softened by plants, artwork, and colourful furnishings.

Bare essentials

Rough swimming-pool concrete gives the bathroom walls the plainest possible surface as a contrast to the encaustic tiles. Reclaimed shutters from a louvered door have been repurposed for the airing cupboard.

The white and grey colour scheme in the bedroom is simple and understated. A rustic milking stool makes a bedside table.
