Interior designers know this best, as they’re often tasked with configuring layouts that feel both functional for real life and well-curated. Using double-duty furniture—pieces that serve more than one function—is an underrated tactic, but one that the pros keep in their back pocket when trying to solve trickky space constraints.
“I am a huge advocate for double-duty furniture,” says interior designer Kristen Cuthbert. “In small spaces, you can really pack a functional punch by opting for pieces that offer multiple uses. Additionally, furnishings that offer hidden storage can work extra hard to hide your things at arm's length while providing a desirable aesthetic.”
Some classic examples of this include an ottoman that doubles as storage, or a sleeper sofa that transforms into a bed for occasional guests. To tap into even more inspiration, we asked interior designers to share their most clever double-duty furniture tricks.
A Smart Window Seat
A custom window seat operates as a triple-duty workhorse in this home designed by Cathy Purple Cherry. The team made the most of this nook by designing an oversize window seat that offers seating by day, a full-size bed for guests by night, and storage underneath for linens.
“In this case, if the right piece isn't readily available, do something custom,” Cherry advises. “It was well worth the investment to do a custom piece, given that it is ultimately serving three purposes.”
A Chest of Drawers
A chest or dresser in the dining room may seem out of place, but with a little creativity, you can turn it into a handsome storage solution. “Inside, it can store formal dishware, linens, silver, and candles, while the top surface can serve as a bar setup, lamp base, or buffet for entertaining,” says Becky Asleson, principal at Maple & White Design. To make it work, she recommends a piece with generous storage and a silhouette that feels furniture-like versus purely utilitarian.
A Bedroom Bench
Take the ottoman concept and lengthen it, and you’ve got a double-duty bench. “A bench with storage at the end of a bed offers a place for extra linens or bulky sweaters while also providing a place to sit,” Cuthbert says. “It can also help the bed to feel more finished, especially if it lacks a footboard.” Choose a soft or tufted bench; the length should be almost as wide as your bed so that the scale feels right.
A Double-Duty Dining Booth
Space is tight in this windowless, 1,100-square-foot ADU designed by architect and homeowner Scott Specht of Specht Novak. A courtyard in the home’s center provides light, and all the interior elements must pull double duty. Specht created a booth in the kitchen that works as both a dining table and workspace, and surrounded it with built-in storage to further maximize square footage.
A Dresser in the Living Room
A dresser also works well in the living room, offering a curated feel and an easy place to store everything from kids’ toys to blankets, board games, and remotes. When placed near seating, it can even double as a side table to set beverages, reading materials, or decor.
“It gives the room a finished feel and hides items you do not want to look at daily,” Cuthbert says, “Choose a dresser that has deep enough drawers, and make sure that the style of the piece fits the look you are trying to achieve in the room.”
A Hidden Murphy Bed
In homes with small spaces, a Murphy bed is the ultimate multitasking move. “It gives you a comfortable guest bedroom when needed, then easily folds away to create a gym or workout space in minutes,” says Ashley Macuga of Collected Interiors. “This approach ensures the room is always functional, whether you’re hosting overnight guests or using it day to day.” Built-in storage around the bed offers space for linens, every essential, and guests’ belongings.
