Deck the halls in December and tuck them away in January.
Though I wish I had the space to host all of my friends and family for Christmas, the walls of my one-bedroom apartment are a bit limiting. It certainly doesn’t stop me from trying to be the host with the most, though. I love to decorate my apartment for the holidays, not just for myself, but for my guests to feel welcome. Being in a smaller space, I have to think wisely about how I decorate. After the parties are over, I don't have a basement for a 12-foot Christmas tree, or the closet space to store an over-the-top inflatable. However, I can certainly spruce up bookshelves, consoles, and countertops to make my home feel extra festive.
I'm really partial to pop-up entertaining pieces—things that can be folded, stacked, or tucked away when the holidays pass. This pop-up Christmas tree creates the illusion of a massive, elegant, curated tree once it’s set up. In reality, it’s a canopy draped over a center pole, meaning it folds down flat and is easy to store for the rest of the year. I also love festive glassware to instantly add Christmas cheer (how can I resist this Anthro coupe glass with a Christmas tree stem?) And I firmly believe in the power of some well-placed cocktail napkins, especially ones embroidered with candy canes.
Though I love my decor, I can't help but get some extra inspiration from interior designers this season. After all, I’m not the only one trying to make the most out of a small space. “Small-space holiday entertaining doesn't mean sacrificing style,” Bradley Odom, principal designer of Bradley Odom Interiors, and owner of Atlanta home decor store Dixon Rye, says. “It's about choosing versatile, beautiful pieces that can transition seamlessly from everyday use to special occasions while maximizing both function and aesthetic appeal.”
Ahead, I spoke to 16 designers, and now, we have a curated list of 28 pop-up entertaining items. You can use everything from vintage champagne buckets to folding chairs that are actually cute. Scroll on for our curated shopping list to build that dreamy holiday setting in your home. Most importantly, you can put away all the decor in January without renting a storage unit.
