I am a very picky, very light, very finicky sleeper. To get a solid night’s rest, I require absolute zero noise, a cool temperature, a medium-firm feel for the bed, and it must beckon me all day long to have a rest. My whole setup took me some time to get it all just right, and the Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper (firm version) is an integral part of my sleep equation. This is a cooling mattress topper that has more of a mattress feel than any other topper I’ve ever tried. I’ve been using it nightly for over two years, and it’s still going strong.

For the uninitiated, Puffy isn’t a household name like Serta or Tuft & Needle, but it’s still an award-winning mattress brand that’s earned loyalty from picky sleepers like me across the country. It was founded in 2016 and sells direct-to-consumer, which helps reduce overall cost since it “cuts out the middle man.” The brand’s primarily known for its mattresses, but it also sells mattress toppers (products are shipped directly to your door, rolled and compact for easier moving), bed frames, smart bed sets, linens, and even a gorgeous, designer-esque swivel chair.

If you’re curious about how Puffy is different from other brands, the retailer conveniently put together a comparison guide. The biggest takeaway, in my opinion, is that its products are backed with a lifetime warranty and 365-night sleep trial, which is much longer than what many other brands offer.

Quick Verdict

Rating: 4.7/5

Best for: Warm sleepers and those who prefer a medium-to-firm feel, but also great if you want to refresh your mattress entirely.

Not ideal for: Shoppers on a tight budget.

Price at review: $262

Bottom line: This is a high-quality, cooling mattress topper that completely transforms your bed.

How Does it Feel?

The Puffy Deluxe Mattress Topper is a plush, medium-thick cooling topper with a mattress-like feel. It is 2.5 inches thick, has a 15" deep-pocket design, and is made from the brand’s “CloudPlush Foam,” which is a responsive memory foam with enough firmness to feel pillowy without swallowing you whole as some memory foam toppers can. I do not like that feeling at all.

I love that this mattress topper is cooling, as well. It has a bamboo-blend cooling cover that's great for hot sleepers and warm climates (as I wave from the Phoenix desert), and is both certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and hypoallergenic. I have never had a problem with allergies or irritation, and I do have sensitive skin.

You can choose from Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cal King sizes, and you also have your pick between a firm feel and a soft feel. My preference is firm; I find this gives nice support while still having a pillowy-soft feel.

Delivery and Setup

The mattress topper came in one compact box.

The mattress topper is shipped quickly and directly to your door in a vacuum-sealed wrapper, wrapped again for extra measure, and then secured in a large box. After removing the wrapper, it unfurled pretty quickly and was easy to secure onto the bed thanks to the deep pockets that attach to each corner of the mattress. There wasn’t much gas-off, and it was ready to sleep on within a few hours. My only complaint is that I would like the topper to be an inch wider across, but otherwise it fits perfectly.

Cleaning and Maintenance

I have to sing the praises of this machine-washable mattress topper! The bamboo fabric cover comes off easily and can be tossed into the washing machine. I let mine air dry since the dry air here in Phoenix gets it done in a matter of hours. However, you can also tumble-dry. If you’re not into taking the cover off, you can also spot-clean with cool water and a mild detergent. I’ve also used an extractor vacuum on the mattress itself for an extra-deep clean.

Verdict: Is It Worth Buying?

Absolutely. I’ve tried 10+ toppers in the last few years—partly thanks to my line of work, partly due to my quest to create the perfect bedroom setup—and this one is my favorite by far. I got the Puffy mattress topper two summers ago—ahead of a hot five months of Phoenix weather—and I still get excited to crawl into bed every single night with it.

It’s slightly firm but still has a nice cushion, is cooling but without being dramatic about it, and it genuinely helps me get better sleep. Plus, the mattress-like feel truly transforms my actual mattress into a new bed, which is a great way to prolong the mattress’s life while elevating the sleep experience. Wins all around.
