So much of what we hear, see, and read about decorating is focused on the softness in a room – the cushions, rugs, throws, and squishy upholstery that make everything feel homely and welcoming.

But successful design is all about contrasts, and a home that is overly stuffed with softness can begin to feel like a child's playroom. I’ve designed such a room myself, and stood back wondering what was missing.

Hard materials are the salve for the overly squishy room, and as the British high street is currently obsessed with retro materials – namely dark wood, stainless steel and chunky marble – we are totally spoilt for choice.

These materials are uniquely cool, and their combination is pretty unbeatable. Dark woods add depth and richness to a room, marble looks elevated and expensive (but doesn’t have to be), and stainless steel feels retro and a little bit kitsch. I would layer all three wherever I feel I’ve overdone it with the cushions…
