Looking for a trend that never dates? Stripes have always been considered a design classic, and for good reason. Confident yet understated, stripes are the perfect way to introduce colour and pattern into your home — all without a complete overhaul.
What I love most about the humble stripe is its ability to add both playfulness and balance to a space. These clean, graphic lines offer a striking visual element, working in both modern and classic interiors, for the minimalist and the maximalist, and in every room of the home. It really is the most versatile pattern around.
Vertical stripes can add height to a room, while horizontal ones can make a space feel wider. Think creatively beyond just decorating the walls too – I like to introduce stripes in smaller doses, such as an armchair, rug, vase or cushion, and it's just as impactful.
For summer, the focus is on multidirectional stripes – vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines – and hand-drawn iterations for an artisanal or playful look.
Play with scale and shape by embracing ticking stripes, awning stripes, and the like, then combine with exciting colour combinations: Pastels and ice cream colours are the perfect spring/summer update; choose vivid shades (like red) for instant wow factor, or go monochrome for a timeless, high-contrast look.
