Nothing beats the comfort of soft, fluffy towels that feel fresh from the tumble dryer. But after repeated washes, keeping towels feeling that plush isn't always easy — especially if you don't have the luxury of a dryer.

The good news is there's a clever trick that can turn your towels from hard to super soft in just one wash — and all you need to do is add one scoop of soda crystals directly into the washing machine drum.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, one homeowner explained: 'Rather than pouring white vinegar into the detergent compartment to soften my towels, I now prefer adding a measure of soda crystals. This approach means the towels emerge from the washer feeling cleaner and softer, even before they've completely dried.'

Instead of coating fibres like a fabric conditioner, soda crystals help to restore absorbency, improve detergent performance, and remove detergent build-up by leaving towels cleaner and with less residue.

Best of all, you can buy a pack of soda crystals on Amazon for just £2.59 — cheaper than most fabric conditioners.

'Washing towels can prove quite tricky, particularly as oily soap build-up can be difficult to remove without using aggressive cleaners that could potentially discolour or damage the material,' adds the writer.

'Yet by using soda crystals, you can remove any residue from your towels, meaning they emerge from the washing machine cleaner, softer, and more absorbent.'

To try this, add around 50-100g of soda crystals directly to the drum when doing a standard wash, alongside your usual detergent. You'll notice your towels feel softer and absorb water better over time.

It's also advised not to use fabric conditioner on towels as it coats the fibres and can reduce absorbency.
