With its easy warmth and deep hue, burgundy is a colour that returns every autumn, and this year is no exception. John Lewis, Dunelm and George Home are already inviting us to think ahead with collections that speak to the rich cosiness we begin to crave as the weather cools – and one particular embodiment of the trend that I'm ready to lean into now is this excellent-value dining set from George Home at Asda.

As we hurtle through the year, there comes a point each summer when it feels natural to start looking ahead. I notice it particularly when it comes to clothes: by now, I’ve made it through with my current summer pieces, and I’m ready to start investing in autumn.

The same applies to homeware. We’ve sorted out our outdoor spaces, swapped our bedding for lighter, more breathable fabrics and replaced thick-pile rugs with flatweave styles. Now, the instinct is to turn our attention to the season ahead, or at least to those transitional pieces that will see us through the changing months.

The 12-piece set has all the colour we’re looking for, while the chunky shape echoes the tableware styles I’ve been seeing all over Instagram in butter yellow and sky blue.

The stoneware set includes four dinner plates, four side plates, and four cereal bowls, which look just as beautiful stacked as part of a place setting as they do on their own. And it's all for just £28.

While the colour undoubtedly lends itself to a rich, autumnal scheme, layered with golden ochre table linen, brass candlesticks, vases of chocolate dahlias and heaps of mini gourds dotted along the table, I’m just as excited to use it now.

For the summer months, I’d keep things simple with a white tablecloth, baby-blue napkins and generous bundles of pinky-peach flowers, such as snapdragons, zinnias and cosmos. It’s an easy, affordable way to bring a little more colour to the table now, while still feeling perfectly suited to the months ahead.
