Rain chains are the prettiest way to channel rainfall while adding a decorative touch to your garden. Originating in Japan, these elegant alternatives to traditional downpipes turn water into a gentle cascade, create soothing sounds, and can even allow you to collect rainwater.

'The main mechanism of a rain chain is a series of cups or links that guides rainwater from the gutters to the earth, a drainage spot, or a collection basin,' explains Matthew Wilson, gardening expert and CEO of Handy Gardeners. 'Rain chains do best when the ground below has adequate systems to handle the runoff – if there is no system created, water will just collect near foundations and create mud.'

Whether you prefer floral designs, antique copper finishes or whimsical umbrellas, these rain chains will make even the wettest weather feel a little more beautiful.
