The Royal Family has given us a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Buckingham Palace's £369 million refurbishment project with a short video.
As part of the Palace's 10-year renovation project, the two-minute clip shows historic Chinese wallpaper carefully being taken down from the Yellow Drawing Room to make way for a lift to be installed.
Posting on the Royal Family's Twitter and Instagram, the caption reads: 'Watch as historic 19th century wallpaper from the Yellow Drawing Room is carefully taken away for conservation. This vital work will protect the wallpaper from incurring damage from nearby construction work as part of the Reservicing programme.'
Many people thought that having the lift built would cause damage to the wallpaper, so the Palace decided to remove it temporarily. Once the plans have been completed, the wallpaper will be rehung for all to enjoy.
'The Reservicing programme is vital in order to mitigate the risk of fire and flood and will ensure that old wiring is brought in line with current health and safety standards. The refurbishment will also improve visitor access and make the Palace more energy efficient.'
The century-old wallpaper — which is beautifully hand-painted with ornate birds, flowers and trees — first came from King George IV's Brighton Pavilion. After Queen Mary discovered it hidden away, she decided to bring it back to the Palace to preserve its beauty — and give everyone the chance to see it.
The Yellow Drawing Room — situated in the South-East Corner at Buckingham Palace — was designed by Edward Blore in the 1840s and used by many members of the royal family as a space to entertain guests.
Back in November 2018, Buckingham Palace first unveiled its plans to embark on a 10-year renovation project in order to keep the building fit for the future. As well as the new lift installation, repair work will also take place on the aged electrical wiring, water pipes and the palace's boilers.
The Queen's residence welcomes around half a million people during the Summer Opening each year, so it's vital that these changes are made to keep the Palace safe.
