Woolworths is NOT making a return to the high street and there are no plans to open trial stores in the UK, say The Very Group, who own the Woolworths UK trademark.
Following a series of tweets on Tuesday morning (27th October), there was a social media frenzy on Twitter over rumours that Woolworths would be making a comeback.
But a statement from The Very Group very much dismisses any notion: 'We own the Woolworths trademark in the UK. The Twitter account @UKWoolworths is not connected to The Very Group.'
Several tweets on the @UKWoolworths account claimed the stores were coming back next year. 'Here to save 2020! Woolworths is coming back to your high street, as a physical store!,’ read one tweet.
'Our return will be via. 3 trial stores, that are being planned to open late 2021. Can’t wait to be back!,' another tweet claimed.
Soon enough 'Woolworths' was trending, and not only for the nostalgia, but there were many early sceptics too, especially after users easily spotted misspellings of Woolworths, plus an inactive website.
Woolworths, or Woolies as it was affectionately called, was a go-to store for household essentials, selling everything including kitchen and dining products, stationery, electronics, garden supplies, toys and school clothes – and it was particularly famed for its Pic'n'Mix selection. It closed its doors for good in January 2009, nearly 100 years after its first store opened in Liverpool.
While these latest comeback claims are nothing more than a Twitter hoax, back in 2017, former director Tony Page said he wanted to buy back the Woolies name from Shop Direct – almost a decade after it collapsed.
Woolworths went into administration in 2008 and Page's bid to buy back the brand was trumped by Shop Direct – the company behind Littlewoods and Very.
Shop Direct, now rebranded as The Very Group, own the rights to Woolworths and they ran Woolies as an online store before closing it six years later.
