When you buy bedding, the key to comfort is the quality of your sheets. Of course, you should be selective about the whole bedding set, from the pillowcases and duvet to the flat sheets. The really important part, though, is often the most onerous to deal with—the fitted sheet, especially for tall mattresses. As restless sleepers know, there are few things more annoying than the fitted sheet constantly popping up over the mattress, causing you to stop everything and try to tuck it back into place. This is where deep pocket sheets come in.
The “pocket” refers to the corner of the sheet and how much stretch it has, or how tall of a mattress it can comfortably cover. Considering some of the loftiest mattresses are 15 inches tall, we consider a deep pocket sheet to measure at least 16 inches. Taller mattresses require a deep pocket sheet, but any mattress can benefit from one! Think of it this way: the deeper the pocket, the more fabric you'll have to tuck in place between your mattress and your bed frame, and the less likely that stubborn fitted sheet is to move.
Deep pocket sheets can be made from practically any material. In fact, some of our editor-tested sheets, ahead, are made from bamboo, linen, percale, long-staple cotton, hemp—the list goes on. Look for your favorite material below, then add that deep pocket sheet set to cart. You can thank us later, when you don't have to fight with your sheets every night.

Senior Features Editor Elyse Moody owns these deep pocket linen sheets from editor-favorite sleep brand Saatva. She loves that her skin is protected from harsh toxins when she sleeps on it (they are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified), and the material only gets softer with every wash. "We have an extra-deep Dux mattress, and few sheets fit it well," Moody says. "Saatva says its fitted sheets have deep pockets for mattresses up to 16 inches high, and this one fit really well. The sheets are generously sized without being too big."
Material: 100 percent Belgian linen | Size Range: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King | Pocket Depth: 16 inches

Deep pocket sheets can definitely be budget-friendly. Take these best-selling Amazon sheets for example. The regular Mellanni sheets are already pretty deep at 16 inches, but every size has an extra deep sheet option that stretches up to 21 inches. Contributing writer Kelsey Mulvey tested these sheets against other budget options from Costco, and she appreciated how it didn't make her feel too hot or too cold while sleeping. "The microfiber material used here is lightweight, breathable, and temperature-regulating," Mulvey says. "While I didn't necessarily wake up feeling cold, I didn't start my mornings in a pool of sweat, either."
Material: Microfiber | Size Range: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, Short Queen, King, Cal King, Split King | Pocket Depth: 16-21 inches

This fitted sheet from Parachute has a lived-in feel and a unique, luxe weave. It combines sateen smoothness with a matte finish, as opposed to the traditional shine. Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner tested these thicker, hotel-style sheets, and love the glamorous look it gave her bed. "They're the perfect halfway point between crisp and soft, simple and charismatic, and thick and thin," Cherner says.
Material: 100 percent organic cotton | Size Range: Full, Queen, King, Cal King | Pocket Depth: 16 inches

At 20 inches deep, these deep pocket sheets are great for people with extra thick mattresses, or tossers and turners who are tired of having to re-make the bed from scratch every morning. The hypoallergenic bamboo bedding is a great choice for sensitive skin, as it'll be smooth and cooling rather than rough and irritating. Cherner swears by the sheets for airy breathability, and says they're "some of the softest [she's] ever felt."
Material: Bamboo viscose | Size Range: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King | Pocket Depth: 20 inches

"I credit these sheets with changing my mind on linen bedding," Associate Shopping Editor Janae McKenzie says. "The washed effect makes it feel much softer than traditional linen, but it still keeps that cozy, slightly rumpled look in its texture that's oh-so-appealing. It helps that with my tossing and turning, even as the fabric bunches slightly on the bed, it doesn't pop off the mattress easily. I sleep on a firm, tall mattress. It has 15 inches of supportive layers, plus a pillow top that's lightly raised, so it's important to me to have sheets that will stay put. These sheets wrap all the way around the underside of my mattress, with a bit of extra room that doesn't feel too taut on my bed."
Material: 100 percent European flax | Size Range: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King | Pocket Depth: 16 inches

The elastic hem on the fitted sheet of this editor-loved set wraps all the way around, so it's not going anywhere once you make the bed. Cherner has had her set for a little over two years, and she hasn't seen any tears, nor do the sheets crease when they're folded. "These require no extra TLC to stay stylish," Cherner says. "I can take them out of the dryer, fold them when they’re still warm, pop them on my shelf for a month while I sleep on another set I enjoy, and put them back on my bed without a single crease."
Material: 100 percent long-staple organic cotton | Size Range: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King | Pocket Depth: 17 inches

After McKenzie tested these bamboo cooling sheets in a radiator-heated room, she was blown away by how they managed to stay cold to the touch. "I often feel like a living furnace when I lie down to go to bed at night, so believe my surprise when there were no night sweats in sight after sleeping on this set," McKenzie says. "I'm actually happy to toss and turn in these; I want to feel as much of the silky smooth fabric as possible."
Material: 100 percent bamboo rayon | Size Range: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King | Pocket Depth: 16 inches

For softness that doesn't sacrifice sustainable practices, McKenzie recommends this bamboo-hemp hybrid sheet set. The sheets have the appearance of linen bedding, but in reality they use a blend of bamboo and hemp, finished with organic solvents that make it extra kind to sensitive skin. This gives the sheet set the both cooling properties and a natural texture that many bamboo sheets lack. After her test, McKenzie was impressed by the how clean and airy the sheets felt after sweatier nights.
Material: 70 percent bamboo lyocell, 30 percent hemp | Size Range: Queen, King, Cal King | Pocket Depth: 16-17 inches

Many linen sheets are designed for hot sleepers and warm environments, but for those who run cold or want a cozier sheet for the winter, allow us to direct you to Saatva's thick flannel sheets. "The best way I can describe these sheets is that they are similar to you wearing the comfiest sweater from your closet," McKenzie says. "These sheets are also super well-constructed because the tightly woven fabric is resistant to pilling. Despite its sturdiness, the fabric is the furthest thing from stiff."
Material: 100 percent long-staple cotton | Size Range: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King | Pocket Depth: 16 inches

SFERRA has been making luxury bedding for over a century, so of course they know how to make hotel-quality sheets built to stretch over even the tallest mattresses. McKenzie tested this sheet while looking for ways to mimic that five-star feeling. For those who prefer that crisp percale, down to the ASMR-style sound it makes, this is the best of the best you can select. The fitted sheet is also so versatile and simple in its design, you can match it with the delicate, high-quality top sheet and duvet of your choice from the brand.

Our search for the best deep pocket sheets started where so much of our research does: with editor-tested and beloved brands. We surveyed House Beautiful editors on the deep pocket sheets that are the easiest to use and that have stood the test of time in our own homes. We then included these high-quality, editor-approved bedding sets and individual fitted sheets in our roundup. Of course, as design editors, we made sure to prioritize style and feel. The sheets come in a wide variety of materials, from natural linen and hemp to silky-smooth bamboo. We also included options at various price points to give you the widest selection to choose from—think pieces from luxury brands like Boll and Branch, Saatva, and Cozy Earth to more budget-friendly picks from Parachute and even Amazon. We slept on the sheets, ranging from several months to several years—a true testament to their durability.

Pocket Depth: In our experience, a deep pocket sheet should have a depth of at least 16 inches. Deep pocket sheets are typically about 16 to 18 inches deep, but extra deep pocket sheets can go up to 21 inches. If the pocket depth isn't listed outright, check the size chart and look for the fitted sheet dimensions. The third number in the specs is often the pocket depth, likely somewhere between 13 and 21 inches.
Mattress Size and Type: The first thing you should do when shopping for deep pocket sheets is find the height of the mattress you want to cover. Mattresses can range in thickness, from as thin as four inches on a sleeper sofa to as thick as 15 inches when packed with supportive layers. You'll want to at least match the pocket of your sheet to the mattress height, so a 15-inch mattress needs sheets with a pocket depth of at least 15 inches.
Regular Mattress vs. Mattress Topper: You can definitely used deep pocket sheets on a regular mattress. However, features like a raised pillow top might stretch your sheets further. In this case, avoid buying sheets with a pocket depth the same as your mattress height. Instead, give yourself a few inches of wiggle room. The same goes if you opted for a mattress topper for extra comfort. The same number of inches your topper adds is how many extra inches you'll want from your sheets.
Material: As always when shopping for bedding, the material of the sheets themselves is key. Certain fabrics will be more slippery when placed on the bed, such as bamboo fibers with an extra soft weave. A deep pocket is extra important for these, as they need extra help staying put. Sheets with more weight and structure, like Saatva's flannel set, more likely to stay put, so the deep pocket is more of an added bonus.

I sleep on a particularly tall bed: the Nolah Evolution, the tallest of Nolah’s mattresses, at 15 inches. I use it on top of a high profile box spring, so it’s really important that I invest in sheets with extra coverage. When I was compiling a list of the best deep pocket sheets, I already had several options in mind to recommend. Additionally, many of my fellow House Beautiful editors and writers have also tested deep pocket sheets on their mattresses and shared their recommendations, ensuring all the items on here have passed through our hands. As a shopping editor, I have reviewed and evaluated dozens of the best sheets, mattresses, and pillows to get you the best night's rest ever.
Plus, House Beautiful editors have spent so much time writing about bedding, so we're a one-stop shop for all of the sleep knowledge you could ever need. We even take it a step further to answer all of your burning questions, like how often you should really wash your sheets.
