From a smart alarm clock to the OURA ring, they're part of our bedtime routine.
For some, sleep comes easily, but for others, it’s rare, even in the most optimal conditions. Anyone who falls into the latter camp needs the sleep tech gadgets, below, that make catching some Zzzs much less stressful and anxiety-ridden. To make sure we’re recommending only the best, most effective sleep devices, we tested most of the products mentioned in this list ourselves. From an air purifier that puts one editor’s allergies at bay to a sunrise alarm clock that doubles as a nighttime noise machine, there are plenty of useful items ahead.
No matter what the issue that’s keeping you up may be, you’ll certainly find the solution here, so keep scrolling to find out what’s been a game-changer for us. Plus, we’ll be the first to say that sometimes the word “tech” can imply an expensive price tag, but plenty of the products on our list are under $50. So, if you want to be well on your way to a better night’s sleep, keep scrolling. We guarantee you’ll add at least one item to your cart. No matter what you end up getting, you'll never go back to sleeping without editor-approved devices nearby again.

"I have had this Hatch sunrise alarm clock for nearly three months, and I swear this little gadget is responsible for turning me into a morning person," Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner says. "Once I paired it with the app on my phone, I customized my nighttime and wakeup routines with specific light hues and sounds, so going to sleep and getting up in the morning are generally more peaceful." In addition to the light and sound settings, you can also customize a specific routine based on the day and time.

"I have been sleeping on a down pillow since before I can remember, so the prospect of testing out a memory foam one didn't seem like something I'd enjoy. However, I love this Marlow pillow so much that I actually ended up getting rid of both my and my boyfriend's down pillows, and got him a Marlow," Cherner admits. "It's adjustable, courtesy of the zippers on both long ends of the pillow, so whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach, there are plenty of ways to personalize your pillow to your specific comfort level. I, for instance, have one side zipped and the other unzipped, which gives me kind of a plush lofty feeling. My boyfriend, on the other hand, has both of his sides unzipped, which makes the pillow softer." Zip them both for a firmer feel.

"I know a Quince duvet cover doesn't seem like it will improve or impair your sleep quality, but this one really helped me," Cherner explains. "My old duvet cover was 100 percent cotton, and I felt like it was a little warm and even a bit scratchy—at least compared to this one, which is so soft, it feels like a blend of cotton and jersey. Whenever I get in bed, I am overcome with a cozy sensation that it makes sleep come pretty quickly."

If you're someone who likes to sleep to a scent, whether it's a pillow mist or essential oil diffuser, this next pick is for you. A few hours before bedtime, stick your favorite candle under a warmer lamp to let the scent fill the room (lavender is said to help ease the mind and relax the body, by the way). This is safer than, say, lighting a candle at night then accidentally dozing off without blowing it out. Commerce Writer Sarah Maberry says, "If you're someone with a sensitive nose, a candle warmer may be a great way to enjoy more potent scents without them becoming overwhelming." However, before you actually fall asleep, make sure to turn off the candle warmer completely, and if you're scared you'll forget: set an alarm as a reminder.

"Before I got the Mila air purifier over six months ago, I don't think I ever slept through the night during the spring and summer months because my allergies were so horrific. I was either coughing, sneezing, or rubbing my burning eyes. Then I got the Mila (and the Big Sneeze filter specifically designed for anyone who suffers through allergy season). I can happily report that I've made it through both spring and summer with no mid-night coughing or sneezing fits."
"I love this ring. It shows me (in extreme and thorough detail on the mobile app) when I don’t get my best sleep and, therefore, to go easier that day," tester Betty Ann Gilrain says. "I like being able to see specifically when in the night I got my best and deepest sleep and when I was tossing and turning or slipping in and out of sleep. Knowing those details helps me plan my routine for the next night, whether that means going to bed earlier, not eating sugar past a certain hour, or even skipping the gym or social plans that day," she adds. "It's really helped!"

"I love how the Google Nest thermostat lets you set a schedule so it’s always automatically a little cooler at nighttime. I like it to be a few degrees colder for sleeping. And if I wake up feeling hot, I can dial it down a tiny bit more from the Google Home app on my phone." Senior Features Editor Elyse Moody says.

"I am a die-hard Hey Dewy fan," Senior Commerce Editor Marina Liao says. "I always have two running on either side of me as I sleep because my room tends to get dry. In the summertime, the A/C sucks all the moisture out and in the winter, the heat makes my face feel parched and crackly. Since I've had this little humidifier, I haven't had any of those issues and most importantly, I stopped getting nosebleeds (from the dry air) every morning. It was getting a little concerning! The Hey Dewy is really easy to clean, so I've never experienced mold or water build-up like with my previous giant humidifiers and I love that it's portable, so I can bring it with me to hotel rooms and Airbnbs."

If you've ever experienced the supremely calming effects of a weighted blanket, you're about to fall in love with this, which is basically the same thing, but for your head. Not only does this weighted sleep mask totally block light, but it also applies just enough pressure to help reduce stress.

While some may want to reduce their sensory intake, others prefer to maximize. If you fall into the latter category, let your sense of smell revel in your own custom cocktail of essential oils while you drift to sleep. Trust us; nothing will make your bedroom feel more like a spa lounge than a luxurious scent. Whether you use just one or mix a few together, you're bound to love whatever mists out of this sleek gadget before drifting off.
"I don't know about you, but even on the most relaxing vacations, I never sleep well. Whether it's because I'm out of my element, my routine has changed, or anything in between, I just don't sleep when I'm not in the comfort of my own home," Cherner says. "Then I bought this tiny and adorable white noise machine, which changed the game in a big way. I pop it on the hotel nightstand and play the rain sounds on a timer because once I'm asleep, I won't wake back up and I don't want to waste the battery (it's rechargeable).
As far as we're concerned, there is no shame when it comes to being afraid of the dark. So, if the idea of trying to fall asleep in a pitch-black room so dark you can't even see your own hands in front of you, opt for an adult night light. This one comes in a whole rainbow of colors, but our personal favorite is the amber, which mimics the soft hue of a candle burning.

Several of my fellow House Beautiful editors, friends, and I tested the aforementioned sleep devices in our own homes for a period of at least two weeks to give us enough time to review them properly. A few of us, however, have slept beside (or in the vicinity of) our beloved gadgets for more than a year, so if we're here recommending them after all this time, you know they're good. Though we didn't measure our improved sleep in a clinic with a medical professional documenting our Zzzs, we did notice that our sleep quality was significantly better with these gadgets than it was without them. I, for instance, can confidently say that my air purifier made my apartment significantly more comfortable during allergy season because I have not sneezed indoors once since plugging it into my bedroom wall.
Of course, the House Beautiful editors are not doctors or sleep specialists, so none of the products are medicinal, as they're simple gadgets meant to relax you enough to fall asleep peacefully. If you have a diagnosed sleep disorder, these nifty finds could help but may not solve the issue. In such cases, you may want to consider discussing the details of your condition with a medical professional. Otherwise, if you notice that you could use a travel-friendly sound machine, a gentle amber-hued glow, or anything else that may make you feel more at ease at bedtime, you can trust that this list is chock-full of products the House Beautiful editors use and love.
