The summer entertaining season is finally here and, with sunshine making increasingly regular appearances, there's no better excuse to gather friends and family around a beautifully dressed table. Whether you're drawn to a joyful, maximalist scheme layered with pattern, colour and personality, or prefer a calmer, crafted aesthetic with earthy sunbaked colour and lots of texture, summer is the perfect time to embrace a little creativity on the table.
One look that never fails to delight is a botanical theme. Effortlessly elegant and inviting, it combines green accents, plenty of glassware and seasonal foliage with the unexpected pairing of rustic wood and polished chrome, striking the perfect balance between relaxed living and understated elegance. These looks feel equally at home at a long garden lunch or an intimate dinner indoors – especially given the unpredictability of a British summer.
On 9 June, House Beautiful welcomed guests to an exclusive Summer Entertaining Masterclass, bringing together cocktails, conversation and beautifully curated tablescapes. Three inspiring looks, styled by author and interiors stylist Emily Henson (@lifeunstyled), demonstrated how colour, layering and carefully considered details can elevate even the simplest of gatherings, bringing the art of entertaining to life.
1. Modern Botanical
Think quintessentially British garden party meets laid-back Riviera style. Green, in all its glorious variations, takes centre stage, with a chartreuse table runner delivering a welcomed dose of saturated colour.
Layers of pattern are introduced through a green-striped tablecloth, glazed cream plates with playful frilled edges and a green splatter dinner plate. Emily points out that the key to layering pattern is knowing when to stop. Here, stripes appear on the tablecloth, planters, lampshade, glasses and napkins before giving way to simpler pieces that allow the look to breathe.
Goblet-style wine glasses, soapstone daisy vases, woven placemats and polished silver cutlery bring balance and sophistication, preventing the scheme from feeling overly busy. One of the most inspiring ideas from this setting is the use of potted supermarket herbs in place of traditional floral arrangements. Styled in decorative planters, they provide greenery for the table while offering a practical second life on a windowsill, in the kitchen or planted outdoors.
A final thoughtful touch comes in the form of a freshly cut herb sprig tied to each napkin with twine and a handwritten name tag. It's a simple detail that helps define the seating arrangement while adding a personal element.
2. Joyful Maximalism
This vibrant tablescape proves that entertaining should be fun. Bursting with colour, pattern and playful details, it's a confident celebration of the more-is-more approach to decorating.
Adding a dose of pattern to each setting are assorted melamine plates. Often reserved for summer soirées outdoors, their matt finish makes them just as suited to indoor dining. Part geometric, part striped, the tablecloth strikes the perfect balance between colour and pattern. Paired with simple reactive-glaze dinner plates and fringed blue placemats, it creates moments of visual calm amid the joyful mix, proving that practical pieces can be every bit as stylish as their ceramic counterparts.
Wiggle-handled cutlery, bobbin salt and pepper mills, and twisted candles continue the playful theme. Rather than relying on a single statement arrangement, Emily has dotted delicate pastel blooms and punchy pink flowers along the centre of the table, using flower frogs hidden inside cereal bowls. The result feels abundant, creative and surprisingly achievable.
It's a clever reminder that impactful styling doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag. A handful of stems, an everyday bowl and a little imagination are all that's needed to create a centrepiece full of personality and charm.
3. Crafted Comfort
Soft mushroom linen forms the foundation of this relaxed tablescape, creating the perfect base for layers of texture, rustic elements and handcrafted detail. Rather than following traditional table setting rules, two runners are laid vertically and allowed to drape effortlessly over the edges, defining each place setting while creating a relaxed, informal feel.
Initially, a frayed-edge placemat was intended to anchor the dinnerware, but stylist Emily made the decision to remove it, pointing out that the runners already provide the defined place settings the table needs. A painterly dinner plate, edged with a mustard yellow brushstroke, is topped with a smaller terracotta-patterned side plate and linen napkins, finished with a hand carved napkin ring, creating a layered look rich in warmth and character.
Texture and earthy tones are at the heart of this scheme. A generous arrangement of sunflowers and golden blooms fills the centre of the table without dominating it, displayed in a rustic ribbed vase and softened with structural sprigs of foliage. When recreating this look, seek out tactile details such as woven finishes, fringing, carving, ribbing and chunky accessories to bring depth and personality to the table.
