With a myriad of sizes, patterns and colourways on offer, rugs are ideal for adding warmth underfoot and tying your interior scheme together. They are particularly useful for zoning spaces – for example in between your living room and kitchen – to create a cohesive look in your home.
'Take a detailed note of the room layout and always think about how each piece will relate to those adjacent,' advises Emily Simmons, creative director at Ruggable. 'You want to make sure your rug is proportionate to the furniture and space. Ensure that your rug is large enough to slip underneath the front feet of a sofa and accent chairs. In small living spaces, make sure your rug feels well-framed within the walls and doesn’t proportionately overpower furniture placements.'
A 160 x 230cm rug would fit nicely in a medium-sized living room.
A rug measuring around 200 x 290cm would be a good fit for a larger living space.
An extra large (or open plan) floor space would suit rugs sized 240 x 340cm upwards.
For arranging around a loveseat, opt for a rug size around 150 x 215cm to fit underneath a coffee table (and don't forget to align with your accent chairs).
If pairing a rug with a sofa, always choose a rug that is at least 30cm longer than your sofa, in order to proportionately match up.
In instances where you are choosing a rug that takes up the whole room, make sure to maintain around 45cm between your wall and the rug.
If layering rugs, choose your top rug in a smaller size that gives approximately 40cm of space around the edge in order to see the bottom layer. Or, opt for a shaped rug as the top layer. A faux hide is a fun go-to!
How to style your living room with a rug
'Think of your rug as a textural layer within your space. When styling your living room, think about it in terms of creating layers of colours, textures, and patterns through the use of different materials, where your first layer would be the floor, next is the rug, and then furniture and decor,' says Emily. 'A rug design will have a varied impact depending on what size you choose.'
For example, large rugs with ornate patterns will introduce a maximalist feel, while minimal or light-coloured rug designs lean towards a modern vibe. 'Consider if you want a strong bordered design or a symmetrical design to centre your space – or, instead, an all-over pattern to add visual interest throughout the room,' adds Emily.

Here's another rug that gets top marks when it comes to durability; we've had it in our living room for almost two years and it's still looking as good as new. Each one has been handwoven in India with a bobbled design and semi-plain border detailing. It looks gorgeous in our Scandi-inspired living room (if we do say so ourselves).
When Dusk launched its debut luxury rug collection, we knew it was something special – and this handwoven striped design quickly became one of our top picks. Crafted in a soft, neutral grey, it brings effortless texture and understated elegance to your living room.
Dunelm's Azure rug blends bold design with luxurious texture. Handcrafted in soft, durable wool with a contrasting viscose border, it brings a subtle pop of colour to any space. Perfect for adding depth or defining zones within an open-plan living room.
If you live in a period property or have a soft spot for vintage interiors, the Mila rug from Dunelm might just pique your interest. A distressed finish and soft chenille-style texture make this rug quietly eye-catching – the kind of understated design that still makes a statement. Don't forget: this rug requires an anti-slip mat.

Mae Reversible Pink Handwoven Jacquard Wool & Cotton Rug
Add a layered look to your living space with Oliver Bonas' handwoven Mae rug. It boasts a reversible design and features a peachy pink colourway on one side and a soft cream on the other. We love the gently scalloped edges for a quirky finish. It adds a gentle pop of colour to a neutral living room — and at £150, it’s a total steal for a wool rug of this size.
Mixing bohemian-inspired design with a distressed vintage finish, this characterful rug ticks all the boxes. It comes in a range of colours and sizes, including blue, red and brown, and has a handy anti-slip backing. The best part? It's machine washable, too.
We're big fans of the Ruggable x Morris & Co. collection – especially this gorgeous nature-inspired number. The intricate green leaf pattern is based on one of William Morris' most recognisable designs: Willow Boughs.
Bring some bold Bauhaus style into your living room with this geometric rug from Habitat. The black and white contrasts give this unique piece a striking monochrome look that'd pair perfectly with black picture frames on the wall.
It’s easy to see why sisal and jute rugs are a go-to for busy spaces – durable, timeless and full of natural charm. We especially love this herringbone design from La Redoute, finished with a smart border for a refined, classic touch. The added bonus? A latex backing means there’s no need for a separate underlay.
Living room rugs aren't just for the centre of your room. If you've got a cosy corner or reading nook with an occasional chair or side table, this crochet rug is the perfect way to add dimension and finish off the space.
If you're looking to achieve cosy comfort in your living room, look no further than a shaggy rug. The high pile of this Aspen rug makes it super soft underfoot, ideal for adding warmth in rooms with cold flooring. It's available in a range of colours, from muted beige and silver to vibrant ochre and ocean blue.
