A tiny octagonal room off the entrance of this historic Hinsdale home had no specific purpose, but designers Marita Simmons and Krysta Gibbons of Kipling House were inspired by the home’s history and decided to make her story. “Based on the room’s location, we assumed it was the original ‘gentlemen’s cigar room,’” Simmons says. “And we wanted to create a place for the modern woman to retreat to after a long week of doing all the things,” Gibbons explains.

The design duo painted the walls a deep purple, inspired by a floral Pierre Frey fabric that contains a subtle hint of aubergine, then offset the hue with the custom peacock-blue banquette and Roman shades. The metal wall motifs from Architectural Grille were designed to reflect a decorative bone inlay box—a riff on an old cigar box. Wall art depicting a reclining woman, presumably at the end of her day, makes the room’s purpose clear.

Since there wasn’t much room for side tables, Kipling House went DIY, transforming a swing-arm sconce into a swing-arm drinks table by swapping the socket for a custom lazy Susan top.

Working with little space, the design team went big on finishes: Burl wood wallcovering, a merlot-leather bar top, brass banding, and stone shelves turned this underused closet into a sophisticated dry bar.
