A room of her own invites contemplation for Hema Persad, CEO of Sagrada Studios. “When you’re a family in a big house, everyone has their own space except Mom,” Persad laments. Once a fashion stylist and always a globe-trotter, the design maven reimagined this awkwardly shaped bedroom in our 2023 Whole Home as a modern workshop where the “lady of the house” could escape and dive into thought-provoking reading, writing, or spirited discussion. “The idea came from the salons women had in the past...where they could speak freely about politics and plan movements,” she explains.

Persad doused the room in deep purples and Bordeaux reds; “broke apart” a circular sectional, firepit-style, to encourage conversation; and added brass interior shutters for that wanderlust vibe. Over the daybed, a calligraffiti wallcovering by Aadil Abedi translates to serenity and peace, inviting restorative solitude and reflection.

The entryway presented an opportunity to make a statement. This dramatic wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries defines the space.

Taking a cue from Moroccan window grates, Persad had Architectural Grille create metal shutters to diffuse the sun’s rays. The original antique mirror panels reflect light around the room.
